The MP7 used to be friggin’ horrible before the last patch. It was really really terrible.

What last patch are you talking about with these balance changes? From a week or two ago? Or did one just hit today?
haven’t managed to get my origin account connected to my gamertag, so no battlelog/feed for me…
EA support suggested dl-ing either EA MMA or Fight Night demos and use the online mode there to connect the accounts, but I couldn’t find EA MMA on the market place. And Fight Night servers have been shut down (for the demo at least).
Racked up good points last night by riding shotgun in the AH-J6 (little bird) as an engineer (on Noshar canals). Kept repairing in flight and spawned back in the heli when I got killed by gunfire. My luck was that this was a skilled pilot, which netted me assist points for his kills.
I’m also getting better at flying the helis. Really amazed at what some pilots can do with them. I also realize the need to harass with stingers even if it is damn difficult to get a kill. It will keep the pilot pushing his limits until he/she makes a mistake.
Are there no in-game voice comms in BF3? I was sure I read something about squadmates using voice comms in-game to coordinate with one another but I can’t see anything in the game to support that. Am I missing something or are people using third-party VOIP solutions?
You have to create a party in the Battlelog, thereare some voice settings in icons on the corner, right of the “com center”. But it will only work with people on your party, so it’s not a chat for the entire team.
I’m sneaking a little BF3 time tonight. I want to enjoy the FAMAS before they nerf it. Plus I can score a few easy MVP ribbons with it in TDM!
BTW, is there a consensus on the best LMGs? I just started Support class so I don’t really know what my playstyle will be. I’m only going to use that class for Rush defense.
I would say no, there is no clear choice. Which is good, most of them are valid.
PKP => heavy damage at short range, heavy recoil
M240 => heavy damage at medium range, heavy recoil
M249 => low recoil, medium damage
MG36, T88 => in between?

If I remember correctly, the Pecheneg PKM is better than the others based on the data people has collected.
I like the M240 more for “run and gun”, and for using the IRNV pre-nerf.
The M60 has ben recomended to me by people on this thread, but I don’t find it a usefull tool on the battlefield.
You want the PKM if you want to shot more than 1000 bullets to bushes in rush metro. You may want the M240 with IRNV in caspian border. Perhaps you can use any other PKM in Market.
Any lmg, but with the suppresion perk on.
Without a bipod, is it best to burst fire? That’s what I remember from BC2. Holding down the mouse button seems to be ineffective.

At pistol range you can get away with spraying, but that’s about it. Even with a bipod you’ll need to burst at medium range.

Yeah, the “hidden” dispersion factor (on top of the normal recoil) is insane in LMGs. If you hold the button, after 2 seconds bullets will only hit close range targets by sheer luck.
Use very quick successive bursts of 0.4 secs each, or longer 1.0-1.5 secs bursts, waiting a bit more between each bursts.

I usually give it three rounds and stop, which means 3-5 rounds being fired depending on how quick my brain is working at that time. With rifles it’s 2 and stop, which seems to be the right blend of effect and accuracy with the SCAR and it’s brethren. For spraying I haven’t found anything as good as the A-91, it’s a beast when scoped at medium range.

Well for short range spraying, nothing beats the FAMAS with laser sight and foregrip, which is why they’re going to rebalance it. I boggle at the hip-fire kills I get with that thing. I like the A-91 for bursty mid range though.
I’ll work on my burst fire with LMGs. It sucks having such low score on Rush defense as I get used to Support class. I’ll get better though. (Yes, I know about chucking ammo.)
I hate Rush so much. Found a great team, two straight wins as attacker (!!), great aggressive squad that stayed alive… then we lose Wake Island as attackers, one of the easiest maps to win.
It just doesn’t make any sense. Conquest makes sense. Team DM makes sense. You generally win those with the better team. Rush is frustrating. You’re more likely to hit a patch of bad luck – so close yet so far.
I’ll keep working at it though.

The best one is the weapon that works well for your playstyle. I use the M27 IAR, with foregrip, holo, and flashlight. The IAR makes me more mobile, and because I instinctively hit reload every chance I get, and the IAR has a 45 round clip, I never get caught in a reload pattern, like I do when I use a weapon with a 100+ clip. I feel like this loadout gives me the advantage of an LMGs suppressive fire, but some of the mobility of an assault rifle, and by going with a foregrip (and flashlight) instead of a bipod I fare a bit better in a straight shootout.
I also take along the C4 which, in addition to making vehicles go boom, I also use to drop the walls around a contested M-COM station - making it easier for the defenders to pick off attackers - or sometimes I use it to blow walls in the back of buildings to move around without having to step out into the street.
I played my first 40 or 50 hours as an engineer but my last 30 have been support with this loadout and I love it.
(Note that I exclusively play Rush, which you don’t seem to dig at all, so maybe my tactics won’t work as well for the other gametypes. Also note that the combat in Skyrim sucks.)
I thought about the initial half-LMGs for run-and-gun but I’d like to try to play a slightly different style with this class. On Rush defense I tend to get too greedy flanking around and then the other team ends up arming the MCOM. I don’t think I’ll ever sit and camp, so I may not take the bipod, but right now I’m leaning toward high magazine count.
I tried the M249 for one round of TDM. I already like it more than the Type 88 due to the low recoil. I’ll try it on Rush defense now.

If you like the 249 I’d highly recommend the 240B when you get it.

On paper they look like completely different styles.
I don’t know if this is common knowledge or if you guys have already seen this but a group of BF3 gamers have researched the in-game weapon damage and put together a comprehensive list of weapon damage broken down by class, weapon type, weapon and range. For each category, they have also calculated the number of rounds to kill and time to kill for each weapon.
Here’s a link to the spreadsheet.
