I just got a 590 meter headshot. I had no idea how to go about getting long distance kills, so here’s some tips.
On Kharg Island I happened to spawn on a squadmate who was way up the mountain closest to B. (I moved over so I wouldn’t give his position away.) We were about 750 meters from D. I started blasting at stuff, but then I noticed he would only shoot at enemies that were prone and not moving. He was very patient. So I followed his lead. Obviously the hard part is figuring out the elevation offset. He didn’t offer any guidance so I just started making test shots. Enemies are so small at that point so you still have to guess a little. The tracer is such a larger pixel it’s still hard to tell where you’re shooting. (Perhaps it would help to run anti-aliasing.) I got 5 or 6 “hits” but didn’t get a headshot until right near the end of the round. It was a high ticket server to give me extra time. I guess there’s a lot of luck involved.
Oh well, I’m checking that off my todo list now.
I just tried it again. This time people didn’t seem to go prone as often. Then a couple guys got super pissed and came after me. First with an attack heli, then a group of 2 guys walked all the way up there. I shot them with my handgun (and someone accused me of cheating because I had an auto pistol, haha). Finally, right before the end of the match, someone came up and knifed me. I have to tip my hat to him. I would’ve done the same thing! That was fun. Totally worth getting knifed.
Got a 460m headshot but it’s too challenging.
Yeah, I had a hard time with a sniper alllll the way off in the distance the other day. I ended up jumping in a jet, flying it over to him and parachuting out behind him to get to him for a knife kill. Shitty part was getting back to the action, and also that by the time I got back, he was back in his spot shooting at me again.

READ IT AND WEEP!
(it’s a long story, but some jackasses managed to spawn on top of the caspian tower and were shooting people from WAY the hell away using 12x scopes on the M98. I managed to get a headshot on one of them with a 12x scope of my own.)
Countersniping someone like that seems like the easiest way to go. That way you know they’re not going to get up from prone and run away. You’ve got plenty of time to dial it in. I’m done with long range shooting though.
I don’t know if I have the patience to get the sniper rifle medal. I usually only get one ribbon per TDM round (12v12, 200 tickets). I’m still not that good at it.

When someone started up with the SOFLAM on the Caspian skyscraper I just hopped into a Venom and the door gunner did the rest. That red light was pissing me off.
H.
But Caspian doesn’t have a skyscraper or a UH-1Y Venom!
SOFLAMs piss me off because I don’t think Javelins give you a missle launch sound in the cockpit. I’m pretty sure that’s the case. Regardless, I usually end up dying without knowing what’s going on. (And I think I maybe got one damage assist as Recon when I put them down, so to hell with 'em.)
Ground/infantry AA pisses me off in general when I’m having a great air battle against other helicopters and jets. It feels like they’re invading the separate game I’m trying to play. Of course it’s fair because I’d start attacking ground units after we got air dominance. I just boo it a little every time I get killed that way, especially when I’m in the middle of a tense fight.

Karkand? Fuck if I pay attention.
Keep trying…
Speaking of which, hop on sometime this week to help me get 9 more Air Warfare ribbons. It’s easier and faster if I can be the gunner with a good pilot.
It takes forever to arrange that in a public game. This weekend I was so damn jealous of my squadmate who kept racking up kills. After we finally blew up, he praised my good flying. I asked if we could swap and he said he didn’t want to because he wasn’t that good as the pilot. Great.
Another funny story about that: I asked a random BF3 friend (who sent me a friend request after a great run together in the attack heli) if he’d help me with that medal. But he said he wasn’t allowed to play on a school night. Oh dear…
Stop corrupting the youths, James!

Oman, that’s it. I’ll keep an eye out for you.

That reminds me: the expansion pack didn’t give us as much destruction as I wanted. There are still too many invincible buildings and rooftops. I guess you have to balance that with the needs of the infantry on that roof, and it’d be annoying for tanks to sit in one place and destroy everything like they did in BC2. But when I see a bunch of snipers and engineers on a roof, I wish I could destroy their cover.
I feel like that’s normally when I break out the mortar and rack up a couple easy kills. But, I feel the same way, I’m always wanting a little more destruction compared to what BC2 had to offer, even though in BC2 it got a little ridiculous.

I think that’s why I loved BC2 so much and only found this game passable was all the destruction in that game. Even if it got a bit silly, it was damn fun. Especially the first time me and a buddy were blasting holes in a building only to overdo it and collapse it, killing ourselves in the process along with destroying the MCom for the attacking team with about 10 or so tickets to go.

Destroying the MCom building with very few tickets left was a great joy in BC2. I’m still not entirely convinced that BF3 is a better game than BC2, but it’s hard to go back since everyone is playing BF3 and it has much more shiny stuff.
I was going to say more about that when I wrap up BF3. It’s hard for me to judge, because most of the reason I like BF3 more is that I spent more time exploring the variety of content. I rarely bothered with tanks and helicopters and sniper rifles and Team DM in BC2, but they’re all extremely fun here.
Still, I think BF3 fully surpasses it with its better Conquest maps. That’s my favorite game mode now. I couldn’t stand it (or even understand why anyone liked it) in BC2.
It was a closer call at release because BF3 had some really poor launch maps. I was especially disappointed at all the meatgrinder Rush stages. To be fair, I never cherished any BC2 maps like I do for Caspian, Kharg, Damavand in Rush, etc. But it wasn’t until B2K that BF3 finally put some distance between the two games.

Well I’ve gotten started playing hardcore servers and working on some sniper unlocks. It’s so nice having all that clutter removed from my screen!
Also, I’m a very capable attack chopper pilot, but it drives me crazy playing on a server where your constantly getting locked by 3 different people as soon as you jump into the damn thing. Does EMP or anything mitigate this more than your common flares?
I tried a little hardcore deathmatch. Nothing too dramatic. Some camping, a little less run-and-gun and a little more sticking with your team. I might try hardcore Rush.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised at everything I’ve tried in BF3, so I feel obligated to explore it a little more. But it might be too little too late at this point. I’m antsy to wrap the game up.
Part of me still wants to join a tactical server and use voice comms. I think I’ll save that for Arma 2 OA and wring out as much run-and-gun as I can here.
The knife is total BS lately. Enemies keep triggering the animation even if I’m shooting right at them. It’s like if you get barely on someone’s flank, you can hit it and it doesn’t matter what happens after that point.
