Yep, that sounds like a videogame. Once the canned animation is triggered, it’s over!
Though now that i think about it, I swear I can remember some occasions where it seemed the animation would interrupt if a third person killed the attacker with the knife just in time.

Yes, you can be saved by a teammate if someone is trying to knife you.
Finally unlocked the L85. I’ll never have to play Squad DM ever again, hooray!!
I unloaded a full magazine of my SCAR into a guy knifing my teammate and i only managed to kill the guy once the knife animation was over so who knows.
Done.
Battlefield 3 is definitely my favorite multiplayer shooter since QWCTF. (I’m cheating a little because I haven’t played many since then!) Some of the reasons I love it existed in BC2: knifing, smoke grenades, reviving, shotguns. But I like BF3 even more because of my commitment to exploring the variety it has to offer.
Maybe commitment isn’t the right word. I went a little crazy here. I ended up maxing out all the vehicles and kits. I earned 30 unique medals and all the ribbons. In BC2 I skipped a lot of stuff, but here I tried everything. And every time I did, I felt compelled to master it. The medals were a good milestone for that. But I also loved filling in the boxes. The addictive progression was both surprising and terrifying. I’ll need to be more careful with competitive multiplayer games in the future.
Still, I’m glad I invested the time here. Each new setup I tried felt like a whole new game. Driving a tank is completely different from sniper rifles, arming an MCOM as Assault is completely different from flying a jet, and zipping around with personal defense weapons in Team Deathmatch is different than capturing flags in the mobile AA. It’s like replaying an RPG as a different class. I’m amazed at the huge variety of content. Perhaps this is old news to Battlefield veterans, but it’s a first for me.
I wasn’t always this enthusiastic. At first I concentrated on limited roles and kits, so I was unaware of the fun I was missing. And the initial maps were pretty weak. The expansion pack really helped there. Still, I’ll cherish a lot of memories on these maps – dominating Caspian Border in a tank, jumping off Damavand Peak on Rush attack, zooming around Grand Bazaar in an IFV, flanking through the middle of the Wake Island map in Team DM.
One casualty of my commitment to variety was slightly lower raw stats. I could’ve stuck with my best roles and game modes to earn a higher score and more wins. But I’m glad I “retired” the dominant stuff in order to branch out. I’m perfectly satisfied with my skill level and rank against other players, given my approach. Final e-peen, for the record:

That’s 491 SPM. You can see my stats dip when I started playing air vehicles and recon. Also see Battlelog. (Link for the image if you want to post yours.)
Now it’s time to set this game aside to get back to my backlog. I’ll definitely jump back in if they ever release more content. That’s scary to think about.
Pity your lost that 1.7 W/L, but I know it’s very hard to maintain, even if you are good/lucky enough to get it in the first place.
I still have played less than 100 hours, right now I am not playing it, but I think in one month or so I will come back to the game.
My stats, using the same format

edit: don’t hold your breath, it seems it wasn’t a trustworthy source/site.

I gotten killed several times, 3 or 4 times while trying to knife somebody only to suddenly be greeted with the deathscreen. So you can definitely interrupt a knifing.
Probably just really really bad luck with the game determined accuracy for why unloading a whole magazine from a SCAR didn’t kill the guy. Also thank you for not using the term clip as is one of my pet peeves.

That is absolutely my favorite part in this game. First time playing the map and with most of the team not knowing what to do, milling around at the top for a bit to suddenly see some of your team seeming jump to their death only to realize everybody is equipped with parachutes and did it too was just plain awesome.
I agree with all of what you said (except the shotguns, I just can’t get them to work for me…).
I also agree that your commitment to this game might have been a bit crazy. But I can kind of see the lure in that. BF3 feels very much like the soldier RPG, like you say, with tons of things to explore.
Unfortunately, my professional and personal life does not allow such a commitment. But I’m sure it would have been tempting otherwise.
I’m glad I did, because it means I was trying new things! Even toward the end I was less concerned about winning and more about finishing medals and other stuff. I changed my priorities halfway through.
This is why I avoid multiplayer games. The last one I put this much effort into (probably more) was Company of Heroes over 4 years ago. My wife still hates that game. BF3 wasn’t as bad because I can always stop playing for a moment to give her attention. Either way, I played more than I intended and I didn’t take a long break between kits like I was planning. I kept finding more stuff to master. It’s like Skyrim but even more compelling. (That’s the game I’m going back to now!)
My only regret is failing to get the MCOM attacker medal. It’d be nice to have that to show my devotion to arming MCOMs. But it’s a tough medal. First you need a team that’s decent enough to make it to multiple stages, but not so good that they arm it before you get a chance. Then they need to be smart enough to cover the MCOM in case you die, to prevent disarming. Of course it’s pretty easy to grind it on small servers (or Squad Rush) where you can make a bigger difference. I didn’t want to cheese it like that though.
Also, it’s easier to arm (and make sure it blows up) when you’re using PDWs and shotguns. I didn’t start doing that until I had already played a lot of Rush games. If I had a chance to do it over, I might’ve earned the medal naturally over time.
Speaking of Rush, I made my peace with it at the end. PDWs and shotguns make it easier to occasionally dominate. I also found a 24/7 Damavand Peak server that let me concentrate on one good map.
It’s still the most team-dependent game mode (aside from the Squad modes, obviously). But when I found a bad team, I just quit instead of getting frustrated.
Winning on the attack side is still the most thrilling victory in the game, other than perhaps a close comeback win on a high-ticket Conquest match.
It does really bug me when my team is getting dominated in rush and I look to see the scoreboard, the other side being covered in gold and silver plaques and mine made up of a few patches in the teens at best.
I figured out how to cook grenades though !
You know, I’m not sure I ever did that the entire game. I figured it was possible because I saw other people do it, but I never thought about it when I needed it. I assume you have to select the grenade (5 key) and hold down the fire button for a bit?
I assume it’s the same on Xbox at least but don’t know about PC, you simply hold the fire button at the same time as the grenade button. It takes AGES to cook though so don’t be afraid to hold on to it for a while.
Little addition, if anyone wants to squad up on PS3 my id is billdouglas
To get the sniper rifle ribbon I removed the scope from the SKS and ran around. Highly accurate semi-auto rifle.
I have no idea how I’m going to get a Nemisis ribbon.

Is it just me, or is conquest assault very much feast or famine? It seems a lot tougher for bad or mediocre teams to do even remotely well in this mode, especially on Karkand and Sharqi Peninsula. Maybe I’ve just had some bad teams, but it seems easy to totally dominate in these maps.
On Karkand, as an attacker, it can be very difficult to get out of the spawn. Attackers are limited to fairly narrow corridors that are usually well covered by snipers (and nobody uses the fucking smoke!). Capturing the hotel doesn’t help much since you’re still very much hemmed in and even when you do manage to flank and capture a different point they’re all very tough to defend.
Sharqi Peninsula has similar problems, though to a lesser extent. The TV station is a damn fortress.
Also, is there anything better than laying AT mines, forgetting about them, and then later on having them blow up a tank and two people? Beautiful. I have a hard time resisting the engineer class because blowing up vehicles is awesome. I only wish the javelin was beefed up a little against tanks. Without a SOFLAM they’re almost useless against tanks.
I had trouble using the SKS with a 1x dot / holo scope. Too slow in TDM, which is where I picked up a lot of the weapon medals. It might work for other modes.
I racked up a lot of Nemesis ribbons on a 200-ticket TDM server with only 5-6 players. There are usually a couple bad players you can farm mercilessly since it will take a while for the match to end. It’s not too cheesy because it’s still a lot of fun.
But the Nemesis medal is another example of how I specifically targeted a medal to get it off my todo list, only to acquire plenty more as I continued to play the game to finish other goals. I could’ve saved a little time.
Wait, are you talking about the medal or one ribbon? From what I remember, the only really tough ribbons are the 2 stationary emplacement kills, and the MCOM defender (since you have to kill people as they’re arming it). Speaking of which, the MCOM defender medal is ludicrous. I can’t imagine trying to get 50 of those. I guess you have to camp the MCOM from a safe position, and let enemies run up to it before you kill them.
Just drive by them and capture behind the lines. The flags are hard to defend, but at least your team can spawn new places and turn it into a regular Conquest game. It’s still feast or famine but I’ve never been too frustrated by that mode.
