Okay, so they’re calling it Battlefield Heroes, not Battlefield 3. But it’s free… and it’s cell-shaded. I heard rumors about this a few weeks ago, but I thought it was bullshit.

I hope they go back to the roots. BF1942 was the best, part for its simplicity, and part for its genius.
Enough with this levelling up pseudo rpg bullshit, and overpowered vehicles and weapons.
Looks like they’re trying to follow TF2’s art style. I’m highly suspicious of this microtransaction supported free play game. At worst I imagine a game where you pay for each clip or rocket fired, and at best I see it as like one of the free web rpg’s where you have to pay if you want to not completely suck.

I don’t know, the Call of Duty 4 leveling up system proved compelling for a lot of people, it’s probably only a matter of time before it’s incorporated widely into other multiplayer shooters.
Wasn’t there already a Battlefield-in-a-new-direction game coming? Bad Company or something?
I buy multiplayer shooters so that I can jump in and pwn noobs. I don’t buy multiplayer shooters so that I can jump in and get pwned by people who play thirty hours a day.
That one is console only. But even it looks a lot like the original PC versions.

Fortunately, rumor is that the upgrades will be things that do not affect gameplay balance. I’m guess this means the upgrades will be things like new skins and such.
The level 55s in COD4 can be killed by level 1… or I’d not be leveling up at all :)
I like the unlock mechanism in COD4 personally, a lot more than most DIKUs specifically. You are effective or you are not. The weapons only augment your actions. And being a pure FPS, it works here better than it did in, say, Planetside.

As everyone’s so keen to point out, there’s a lot of room for fucking this up.
But… there’s also great potential for this game to be HUGE. It’s free and it’s designed to run on modest computer systems. If the gameplay’s there, I think this could be as big as WoW.
Somebody already said it, and they haven’t released formal screenshots other than the GFW magazine cover, but could they copy Valve anymore? I mean, this is ridiculously blatant. Leave it to EA to see something new and try and emulate it immediately.
Actually why so much hate? This sounds cool to me. Sure, it’s not new, but it will reach different people than BF currently does.
The answer is yes, they could. That soldier model looks like a slightly-more-detailed Lego character. Contrast it with the HWG they have on the same cover, Valve’s art style is much more compelling.
