How does it compare to BF1943? That was a great package for $15.
Speaking of which, I’m surprised Vietnam isn’t a standalone game, since making it DLC cuts off a lot of potential buyers. I mean, BF1943 could’ve been DLC for BC1 (same engine), but they were smart enough back then to release it on its own.
I agree that that’s one of the cool things vanilla BC2 has going for it. On the other hand Vietnam forces you to be more careful and is a more tense game. I like having both options available, especially since vanilla BC is still fresh for me with all the new maps.
I’m glad DICE tried something different instead of just re-skinning BC2, as much as I love it.

The 360 version of Vietnam is out. Loved the little of Conquest I’ve been able to play so far, and it seems to be much more intense than the regular game.

I had a brief dabble in Vietnam last night. It’s certainly more lethal than regular BFBC2 - or perhaps I’m just out of practice. It seems that there is lots of concealment and very little hard cover on the maps, which tends to make for a frustrating time. In every online shooter I’ve ever played concealment is all but useless once the playerbase are familiar with the standard silhouettes and animations, and this is no exception. Once you’re spotted, there are few places to hide apart from balsa wood shacks which instantly disintegrate.
I also found that there’s a pretty silly lack of viable anti-air options. Watching the entire VC team using only unguided rockets and small arms fire in a vain attempt to down the Huey strafing their spawn is not the most edifying spectacle. It happened in three of the four rounds I played on two different servers. That might be unlucky, but I hear it’s frequent. Struggle to see how that got through testing.

A helicopter is easy to shoot down with a regular weapon, as long as other members of your team shoot at it as well.

This was very much not my experience yesterday. Certainly my magnum ammo m60 was getting a lot of hit indicators to little effect. Perhaps I was unlucky, and had poor teams and/or skilled pilots, but the Hueys were a dominant force in nearly every round I played.
There are less anti-air options. No fixed weapons (mgs, at launchers) or fixed AA positions, less ground vehicles in general, and no tracer dart gun.
In theory, it’s balanced because now aircraft recieve damage from small arms fire. Right now, i don’t now if it is better (for the usual infantry guy like me) now or before.
I have BC2 for the 360 and was going to get Vietnam. Both my son and I would like to play, however… Given the addition of the whole EA login thing (and I’m pretty sure that we have different EA accounts) does that thwart the normal 360 method of him being able to play Vietnam so long as my gamer tag is signed on (or, if it was the 360 originally purchased on, no need for even that)?

Got this on sale. I’m having more fun than I’ve had with random MP in ages.

I bought BC2 for $7 but now I’m wondering if I should bother with that game or jump straight to Vietnam? My primary interest is Vietnam partly because I have fond memories of the BF:V. I’m also guessing that Vietnam would be more noob friendly because of the newness?
Vietnam is definitely not more noob friendly, on the contrary, it’s much more brutal than normal BC2. I think you should try vanilla BC2 first.
I like Vietnam, but vanilla BC2 has more gadgets and cool vehicles, and will give you a better taste of BC2 if you’re starting now.

yeah, vietnam is brutal – I went like 20:5 a lot of the time. I am also pretty sure a few guys with numbers like 61:10 were using cheats.
Agree with this; the lack of scopes on all but the Recon class makes for more up close gun fights.
Verified that normal XBL rules apply – bought via dashboard (not in in-game store) on the other 360, my son can play without me being logged on.
I agree. vanilla BC2 has a lot more options if you are not a twitch master. It is also a lot easier to see enemies, even if they are not spotted for you. There are lots of ways to get points as you learn the maps and advance other than racking up kills.
So I played a bunch of BF:BC2:V last night. Lots of fun, but due to how small the maps are and how little there is to unlock, I doubt I’ll play it as much as I play the regular maps. It is a nice little after-dinner mint.
The flame-thrower is a hoot, even if it is somewhat limited in its use.

Does anyone have any idea whether I can use the EA store’s version of Veitnam with a Steam copy of BC2?
I’m asking because the EA store have a sale on right now but Steam don’t.

i used a d2d copy of vietnam with an ea copy of bc2.
it’s just a serial you associate with your account once you login to the ea thing ingame.
