Utterly, totally ripped off from Firefly. But, that’s okay! It is cool.
Another belated (yet premature!) cheer for Firefly, for not having sound effects in space (although it would be silly in a show like BG, where there are battles and such).

It’s the same FX house as Firefly (the Serenity even shows up in the mini-series in the background), so I’m sure that’s a factor.
Yeah, I love how they intentionally muffle the sounds of ships and gunfire that you’re not supposed to hear.
Ironically, if they left out the sounds in space, many people would consider it to be “unrealistic” in the same way that people expect to hear tire-squeal whenever a jet lands.
Can anyone explain what is up with Six? That is one religious robot.
And did I miss the explanation on Cylon theology in the miniseries? How exactly do they deal with believing God created the entire universe, except them? Is that supposed to explain their erratic behavior? And what exactly do the humans believe? Are they really polytheistic or are the gods of Cobol (sp?) just manifestations of different attributes of one God?
Is the whole Cylon bad attitude due to them being monotheistic and the humans polytheistic? Because I just want to see explosions and hot aliens, not religious allegory.
Just wanted to chime in and say that I thought the first two episodes of the series were just great, far better than the mini (which I quite liked) and definitely a good omen for what’s to come.
I thought “33” was particularly intense, and the opening ten minutes of that episode fantastic viewing. There’s just something about the Galactica jumping to light-speed a split-second before the massive Cylon torpedo battery can hit it that never gets old.
Gosh, I guess you’re just going to have to watch the rest of the series and find out…
No, the full details of the Cylon theology have not been given within the episodes to date. There are further clues coming in upcoming episodes, but nothing that provides a clear and concise picture of exactly what’s going on.
We do know the Cylons are monotheistic while the humans are polytheistic in their beliefs in the Lords of Kobol. You can hear Boomer saying “Oh my gods!” in the episode “Water” and you’ll see more direct references in later episodes with a few of the gods namechecked along the way.
That’s cool. I was just afraid I might have missed something from the miniseries.
Well, it’s really only cool if they eventually reveal a coherent, plausible explanation. If I get a Donnie Darko style explanation, I’m petitioning for the release of the killdozer.
Does anyone else get the feeling that the Cylon’s are toying with what’s left of humanity? It’s as if they’re studying us to see how we respond to extreme pressure and in doing so, reveal our true nature.
Live with a man 40 years, share his house, his meals, speak on every subject. Then tie him up and hold him over the volcano’s edge, and on that day, you will finally meet the man.
Or maybe they were fans of Firefly, and got pissed when it was cancelled.
I was going to reference Andrew Weiner’s great short story “Distant Signals,” but I just realized that the Futurama episode where the aliens threaten to destroy earth over a missing episode of Ally McBeal was probably more relevant.
Don’t you mean “Single Female Lawyer”?
When? I’d like to see that.

I think you only got a very quick shot of it, it was one of the ships in the rag-tag fleet. Since the Serenity looks like a beat-up pile of shit, it would have fit in quite well.
Damn that episode was funny.
I re-watched the mini-series then sat thru 33 and Water…
Agreed, 33 was extremely intense- definitely a fine episode.
After watching Water, I have to say I really don’t know who is a bad guy…eg Cylon and who is not…I am either dumb or we really DON"T know.
As for religion, Six smacks of the androids in Blade Runner…trying to find meaning in their lives by believing…?
And hey, it certainly beats the hell out of Enterprise.
3 months until Serenity…the FireFly movie…
Hah, too bad BG an Enterprise are on at seperate times. Sci-Fi should have gone head to head with Enterprise. That would have been the nail in the coffin. BG is light years ahead of Star Trek.
Amen.
Weirdly enough, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at this season of Enterprise. The first episode got rid of 90% of Berman & Braga’s idiotic notions and the Vulcans were explained a few episodes later. Is the show good? Eyah, tough to say. It’s certainly burdened by the previous seasons but it’s way ahead of where it was. I admit to giving them the benefit of the doubt because I sense from the eps they’re actually trying, as opposed to before where they didn’t seem to give a flip.
