BC:M Gold question for Derek or Brian

Well, seeing as how the Battlecruiser thread has finally scrolled off the page, I figured I’d start another one. One can never have too much troll-bait…

Derek/Brian, is there some reason you know of that Best Buy doesn’t have BC:M Gold in their online database? I know they carry Dreamcatcher games, so I expected them to have it. I was going to go down and buy it today, but I don’t want to waste a trip if they’re definitely not carrying it. Thanks.

When did this game come out? Can’t find a release date anywhere.

Well, supposedly 3/31. At least that’s the date that EBGames had for it, and they’re usually pretty accurate. They’re indicating that it’s available for shipment now, so I’m assuming it really is.

Well, I won’t be able to answer for sure until I get back into the office on Monday, but I seem to recall that Best Buy passed on this SKU.

It’s getting harder and harder to secure PC shelf space, particularly at Best Buy.

Might I suggest you visit your local GameStop? They supported this game very well, and in fact, you’ll be getting a GameStop-branded version with an extra 15-mission campaign exclusive.

And it did indeed begin shipping on 3/31. We have reports of it being available at some GameStop and EB locations today (Friday).

Thanks for the info, Brian. I’m sure you’re right. I went ahead and drove over to Best Buy this evening and they don’t have diddly-squat on their shelves. It looks very much to me like others have said: they’re getting out of the PC game business, or at least scaling way–and I mean way–back.

Too bad. With EB cutting back and now BB, too, the only alternative left for me is mail-order (or Fry’s, which will just never happen in a million years). I’ll do as you suggest and order from GameStop.

I picked up the game at my local EB on Friday.

Cool. Hope you enjoy it Myth. There’s certainly your $29.99 worth of reading material in there, huh?

Anyways, in case you didn’t see the notice on ours or Derek’s website, multiplayer will be unavailable until he gets back from his Birthday Vacation Extravaganza ™ on Monday. We had to change the server hosting company at the last minute, and we couldn’t get adequate hardware up and running in time.

Oh, shit. I hope Huffman doesn’t read this.

I am enjoying it (I have the other titles in the series as well). Kudos to Dreamcatcher for putting together a quality package. The production values are very high, nice thick manual with appendices (which were on the cd in the last release) on high quality paper as well as the galaxy map. Something you don’t usually expect with a “gold edition” at that price point. Usually you get a “leaflet” as a manual with the majoriyt of the docs in PDF on the cd.

Thanks for the info, Myth. I’m extremely glad to hear it, as I don’t own the previous games and have only ever played the demo. A nice printed manual is going to be a big help to me.

Glad, I ordered the game last night from GameStop. I should have it Tuesday. So tell your kids who they owe for their college education… :)

I feel that I have to extend a compliment to one or more of our unregistered guests for coming up with amusingly contrived adjective-noun combinations for every new post. Why can’t all guests be like that?

It reminds me of the time I saw a player named CommonBileDuct on Battle.net. WTF? :D

Glad you’re enjoying it and thanks for your continued support

I added a bundle of new content (way exceeding what I’d originally pitched to Dreamcatcher) in the Gold package in order to make it worthwhile for both the single and multi play crew.

Yep. Thats one of the reasons I signed a multi- title deal with Dreamcatcher. They have been very consistent in having high quality production materials (ok, the box art on Iron Storm sucked. balls. only bested by Gore’s rubbish looking box cover) that make the game stand out and grab you by the throat. And all the assets you see used there are game assets which I provided. Some of them were posed in order to make the scene look as intended (e.g. the marine talking off his helmet).

What I did was update the manual docs with everything that I had revised since the game was originally released in 2001. That material is available to the BCM crew as an online html file which I put together a few patches ago, but BCMG printed manual has it all integrated.

And one of things we kept hearing was that the tutorials and a listing of acronyms needed to be in the manual. So, I gave Brian the appendices and they ended up in the back of the manual. We ran out of time so the acronym list he was putting together, didn’t make it in - but it should be available as a PDF file later this week.

btw, that galaxy map is the same one that is on the reverse of the printed BCM keyboard sheet. Didn’t one come in your copy of BCM?

Yep. And we are even offering $10 off to existing BCM owners who have POP. As a previous BCM owner, you get a wealth of single player content and multiplayer for $19.99

Anyway, as Brian pointed out, I made a last minute decision (it was my call) to switch hosting services due to tech and costing issues with the previous provider. And apart from that, the new host provides better server, brand new equipment (which I end up purchasing) and reasonable rates. I wanted to establish this relationship right now because I’m going to re-use them for more public servers in six months when BCG (the triple-A title which has all my eggs) rolls around.

To see a list of whats new in the upcoming server patch, I uploaded an update advisory before I left. I’ll be back later tonite (I cut my vacation short by four days because of this btw) and will resume working on getting everything up and running tomorrow when I gain access to the servers.

Well, now that it’s out, when do we hear about your current projects?

ok, the box art on Iron Storm sucked. balls.

Huh? That it the main reason I bought. You should know, Devastation sleeper and all.

uhm, hmmm. Thought my other main current project was already widely discussed here? Is there anything in particular that you’d like to know?

The main focus right now is in BCG (the sequel to BCM) due out later this year.

BCO, the MMOG version of BCG should be in public Beta sometime in early 2004

And the XBox project is also on-going but under tight wraps.

Wumpus,

Well, I didn’t like it. Some other people didn’t like it

You liked it. And you actually bought a game because you liked the box

So, what do you want me to do about it?

As for Devastation, if you’re going to quote me, please do it right. I never said anything about it being a sleeper hit.

That’s the one.
