Best Game of 2002

Have we already done this? If so, I missed it.

What are your picks for the best game(s) released in 2002?

Here are my personal top 5:

  1. Neverwinter Nights
  2. No One Lives Forever 2
  3. Morrowind
  4. Warcraft III
  5. GTA3

Runner Up: Jedi Knight II.

1 Icewind Dale 2
2 NWN
3 Warlords Battlecry 2

Me:

  1. (by a fairly wide margin) Jedi Knight II

  2. Divine Divinity

  3. Morrowind

I liked a lot of other games, UT2k3, Age of Mythology, Geneforge, Icewind Dale 2, but honestly I didn’t play any of them enough to make a “best of” list. Really only #1 and #2 are games this year that I would say really were just a lot of fun to play, but that’s partly because I just didn’t put in the time on some of the others.

I have not played much this year. It was a lousy year for sims. But if I had to make a list, this is what would be on it:

Nascar Racing 2002
No One Live Forever 2

Freedom Force
Deungeon Seige
Battlefield 1942

I know for a fact this is a duplicate thread, but I’m too lazy to look up the other one.

Some of my favorites:

Morrowind
Ratchet and Clank
Sly Cooper
Virtua Fighter 4
Halo
Age of Mythology
Battlefield 1942
No One Lives Forever 2

See http://www.quartertothree.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1434&highlight= for game of the year selections.

I guess I’d pick Morrowind, reluctantly. I don’t really feel any game merited GOTY last year.

Its been done already.

You know what? Animal Crossing.
Wanna make something of that?

Also on the console side I’d go with ‘Time Splitters 2’

GBA: ‘Advance wars’ hands down.

PC: ‘Moonbase Commander’, a lot more ‘pretty’ games or more ‘deep’ games, but I’m still playing this one.

Gordon, Geneforge came out 2001, but I agree that it’s STILL a great game, it’s the only shareware I’ve ever bought, I even bought a CD just in case.

Morrowind, easily.

A few runners up:

Battlefield 1942
Medieval: Total War
NOLF 2
Neverwinter Nights
Freedom Force

Great year for PC games, all in all.

Whoops. Well, here’s to Jeff Vogel anyway. Long may he reign!

I’ll vote for really nothing.

I didn’t play a game that made me say “wow! the’ve evovled or changed the forumla.”

Games like Jedi Knight 2 were huge disapointments. Raven repours their formula into a Star Wars game. The story was appalling shlock. The only weapon that was fun was the saber which appears half way through the game. Force powers were well implemented but how was it better than than the first two titles in substansive ways? Especially with the Force the game was a step back from Jedi Knight.

I thought morrowind lacked daggerfalls breadth and ambition.

NWN was shipped unfinished and bugged demanded the users do the job for bioware.

My proclamation for 2002 is the year of stagnation. There wasn’t a Thief or a Fallout there. No strategy game that enthralled me like SMAC.

Personal PC favorites (and yeah, we have done this before but it somehow never gets old):

  1. Medieval: Total War
  2. Combat Mission: Berlin to Barbarossa
  3. Morrowind
  4. BF1942

Force powers and Saber duels worked better in JK2, I thought. And nothing beats using the “Jedi choke/grip” power on a Stormtrooper. Or the sense of running through a crowded room with Force Speed on and slaughtering 20 stormtroopers. JK2 did a better job than JK1 of capturing the sense of being an “ultimate badass” Jedi.

JK2 gave me pretty much my only “gaming bliss” moments of the year. For that, I gladly forgive the slow ramping up of the saber-less levels. Once it hit its stride – Bespin, the Imperial space station, etc. – it was as good as it got for me in 2002.

PC: Battlefield 1942.

Console: Suikoden III. Maybe not as good as Planescape: Torment, but the story was approaching that level of maturity. And maybe something was lost in the translation.

Last year?

Age of Mythology
Battlefield 1942
Madden 2002
Tiger Woods 2003
Freedom Force

Trolling the board was the best game of 2002.

So the story does pick up, huh?

WBC II. Brought me back to RTSes with enough changes and refinements to make the genre interesting for me again.

You thought this thread was for this year’s goty?
