Best Game of 2002

MoHAA for single player, with JKII a close second.
Tie between Day of Defeat 3.1 and BF1942 for multiplayer.

No, it was rhetorical. I filled out so many publication and website’s GOTY award sheets in late November/early December 2002, that I actually had to write “last year” to myself to get my bearings.

GBA: ‘Advance wars’ hands down.

Not from 2002, but thanks for contributing to this fucked up duplicate thread.

Yeah, I bet goty is a much bigger deal when a lot of your freelance/day job work revolves around games. Personally I have trouble keeping track of which games were this year’s games. I had almost forgot about Nascar Racing 2002.

I did forgot about MoHAA! Add that to my personal favorites list.

No

Animosity toward a duplicate goty thread? Oh, my. This from the guy who brought up Half life goty threads for months on end.

MoHAA’s single player is exceptional. Unfortunately I encountered a show stopping glitch during the Omaha Beach level that crashes the game at the same point every time. I went back and forth with EA tech support for a while but they had no remedy. The entire game ran flawlessly up to that point and I can play online no problem whatsoever. I’m going to have to find a cheat to skip the leve to keep playing, which I hate to do…

How many GOTY threads do we need? Twelve?

My year 2000 counter-strike lobbying was a completely different topic. If you need any evidence of who was right about that, just visit the gamespy stats page any old time, because I sure as hell don’t see Flying Heroes on there. Or Sacrifice.

Even with 12, we’re way behind the GoneGold forums, so don’t worry…

Or we could start a “Favorite Lists List” thread.

Ten Commandments
Bill of Rights
Schindler’s List
Woodrow Wilson’s 14 Points
etc…

But I BOUGHT it in 2002…yeeeaaaahhh…that’s the ticket…

I really don’t see the harm in duplicating a thread on such a HUGE and interesting topic.

There’s nothing wrong with it. Wumpus seems to forget that he’s not required to read every thread.

Pfftttt. But how many counter-strike lobbying threads did Q23 have to suffer through? You of all people have no right to get upset over duplicate topics.

Battlefield: 1942

Yeah, apparently so. No offense to that various folks that picked “nothing,” but I thought that last year was a banner year for games, in all genres (well, with the possible exception of adventure). If you honestly couldn’t find anything at all to get excited about in 2002, then perhaps you are burnt out on gaming in general.

Maybe so. There was plenty of good games, but they were all so…uninspiring. Nothing OMFG like Xcom, or Thief, or Mission Force Cyberstorm, or any of the greats.

I could probably pick one, but none of them stood out enough to bother. BF1942 was the closest, but I got tired of it pretty quickly. And AOM is fun, but it’s just the Same Damn Game all over again.

Wumpus wouldn’t have griped about a the duplicate thread if someone else had started it, I’d wager.

No, just computer gaming apparently. I got a number of great console games last year: Eternal Darkness, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Two Towers (GBA), Advance Wars, Onimusha 2, Crazy Taxi (PS2), Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance (PS2), Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (PS2).

(Some of those were definitely released before 2002 but I don’t know which ones, and some were released earlier in America or Japan but didn’t make it to Europe until 2002.)

Computer gaming, on the other hand, was pretty much flat. Warcraft 3 and Might and Magic IX were thoroughly enjoyable, Age of Mythology and Morrowind were fun for a while, Civ3: Patch the World was disappointing but still somewhat okay for a Civ fanatic like myself. Otherwise? Um.

I do hope that some 2003 games for the PC will live up to the hype, unlike their 2002 brethren: Freelancer, Rise of Nations, Unreal 2, MOO3 (we can hope…), Galactic Civilizations. If I was burnt out on PC games I probably wouldn’t play Civ3 as obsessively as I do.

Can’t agree with that. It was a terrible year for flight sims. Nothing has yet matched the superb IL2 Sturmovik which was released in late 2001.

And endless regurgitations of Microsoft Flight $imulator do not count. Combat Flight Simulator 3 was also a lame duck and Strike Fighters suffered from Strategy First-itis.

But there were some great games overall during 2002. Age Of Mythology, Medieval:Total War, Combat Mission BB, NOLF2, and Morrowind.

2003 is looking much better for flight sims with IL2 Forgotten Battles and Lock On : Modern Air Combat.

I’d like to add that I love Neverwinter Nights which I only purchased two weeks ago but have been playing every day.

2002 I found to be an eventful year for gaming, however no release stood out for me and said, “this is the best Game you touched this year!” other than Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Sure it came out in Dec. 2001 and it really shouldn’t be counted, but I didn’t get to actually try it until 2002, and well despite a bunch of quality titles that did release in 2k2, it was SSBM that stood above them all for me. (That includes the new Zelda which I got a chance to play through last month)

PC : Jedi Knight 2

GC: Animal Crossing

PS2: did GTA3 come out last year or 2001? either way, that’s my pick, and if it didn’t come out in 2002 then I’ll go with Madden
