I love the concept of Letter Press. I hate that the general player population doesn’t actually seem to understand how to play the game. I put it away because random matches were never challenging.
I play some (but not all) of the games recommended here, and I am in a similar position as you.
My cousin and I play a lot of 2-player turn-based games where we play a quick turn on our iPhones and send it to one another, random times during the day. We used to play Scrabble but we got bored of it after a bit.
By far, my biggest recommendation would be Ascension. It’s a card game, a tiny bit similar to poker or Uno, easy to learn, and only a little bit difficult to master, compared to some of the other games.
The online play is flawless, and a game can be finished in as quickly as 10 minutes, or be easily dragged on if you guys are busy for a few days. The app gives you a good breakdown of previous rounds, so even if you havent taken a turn in a couple days, it’s easy to re-jog your memory. Plus, there are several forum-based leagues on the net, and this forum has the most active and strongest league I’ve seen!
Ticket to Ride and Neuroshima Hex are other great games with similar positives I’ve mentioned for Ascension!
Also, Ascension is great for trash talking between cousins/brothers hahaha.
Ravenmark: Mercenaries is out. I’d suggest taking a look for async tbs gaming.
Ravenmark is on sale at the moment.
Does it actually have multiplayer or is it just single player turn based?
Single-player only (though with a meaty campaign). Mercenaries is the (free) mp game.
I noticed that Ravenmark was on sale, so I finally got around to looking at the Episodic version, which is essentially the demo. The writing and sillyness (infantry in 440 pound armored suits? Really?) turned me off, and the system wasn’t interesting enough to compensate. It didn’t help that the game doesn’t, for example, show archery ranges, or give you any way to estimate the results of a clash.
Also on sale is turn based SF game Legion of the Damned. There’s a free demo. Full game is (I believe) $3, down from $5.
Since Legion of the Damned has been $3 since September, I’m guessing that price is permanent.
Ah, nevermind. I’d seen it in the appshopper list of things on sale now.
Yeah, it is best to find some friends to play the game over and over again. I play it against my fiancee, and a good friend of mine, and part of the fun is watching the meta-game transform over time. Would be difficult to get that sort of experience playing against randoms.
Loving this so far.
Some good came of this thread then!
What the hell? UniWar HD returned a “no longer available” error.

Still working for me.
Great! If you and your brother get into NH, make sure to join the league in the forums. It’s super friendly and Dave (the kind gent who runs it) does an outstanding job.
Love the game. Will check out the league.
Skulls of the Shogun which is free at the moment (but worth actual money).
Thx to Chris Nahr on the iOS and iPad threads for letting us know it is free (act quickly).
Thanks. Bought.
