Best RTS game ever is

I’m in a polling mood. What you like best huh?

(edit) took out Urban Assault for Kohan and Red Alert for Seven Kingdoms. Okay then!

etc

Well, I know what mtkafka voted for. :) 2 votes now.

It is deeply disappointing to me that so many of the interface and design innovations that TA brought to the table have been completely ignored even in RTS games released a month ago. Universal command queues, anyone?

Of course, in other respects, such as unit caps, upkeep, and unit experience tracking, TA has been surpassed. And as I’ve pointed out earlier, TA’s gameplay was hurt by the lack of any kind of meaningful population cap in particular.

Um, where is Myth? It needs to be on this poll.

And Myth II, and Homeworld Cataclysm. And Age of Kings.

No kidding. And although it’s not an RTS in the strictest sense I’d like to see Shogun on there :)

Where in the blue blazes of hell is KOHAN???

No Europa Universalis 2?

Can I vote for Sid Meier’s Gettysburg?

Warcraft II gets my vote. Blizzard got it so right with that game.

Warcraft II gets my vote. Blizzard got it so right with that game.

Except for that whole bloodlust thing, which made humans pretty much usless… can’t agree with this. WC2 was great, but it was heavily flawed in terms of race balance.

Race balance? How about building balance? I still can’t believe the kali.net players all walled themselves in with farms…

Yeah, that too. At least Warcraft 3 doesn’t have the problems of Starcraft or WC2-- Blizzard is substantially improving on the formula each time. It’ll be interesting to see what their next RTS looks like. If I’m still alive then.

What? How could you leave Sacrifice off the list? :P

Urban Assault! I was just thinking about that game, an underappreciated classic. A friend of mine was telling me about Deathrow (Xbox), and I was thinking it reminded me of UA in that you’re always in the center of the action, no matter what. That game got a lot of stuff right I think.

Back to keeping Caen from being relegated to the 3rd division (TCM2003).

What still amazes me is that TA is still tops. It makes me think that many of the ‘enhancements’ that other developers add to their games just mean extra busywork which annoys the hell out of players. What I enjoyed about TA was that there were different strategies you could follow which suited your play style. I was a turtler because I just loved the defensive weapons and the Bertha. (I daresay if Brad Wardell still looked up these forums he would tell me that I would be toast with that strategy). So why is it that such an old game is still top? A rosy glow of nostalgia or a definite -it- that the game had?

Isn’t Deathrow like a fighting game? URban Assault was one of the first action/rts games… better than Battlezone and Uprising imo because it was the first that got RTS and Action just right. Are you thinking of another game? I haven’t played Deathrow so i’m not sure…

Another rts I liked that was underappreaciated was the KKND series and the Warhammerish Warwind series. Also I couldn’t put anymore rts in that list because it says its too many options or something… I would have put Kohan and Myth up there… but Myth isn’t an rts in the general sense… more like a tactical battle game… imo… like Freedom Force and Fallout Tactics (and excellent Soldiers of Anarachy recently)…

And TA = awesome. As always. Wish Taylor was making an rts again.

etc

You can effectively turtle in TA if the metal on a map is few and far between, even then the resource gathering in TA usually hits a cieling where everyyhing then depends upon what you’re building… usually at the 150-200 metal / 4000 energy income levels… and you can even make secret bases with anti radar (which I did sometimes!).

A new TA would be so damn cool.

etc

Starcraft is tops(at least with this poll so far :D ) and rightfully so. TA is a close second for me. Sucks that there hasn’t been a good sequal for that game.

Starcraft is good, but my knock against it (and any other War type game) is the rock paper scissors effect. Its puzzles me that anti air towers cant even fire at ground troops, even if they damage them little, it should be allowed. I hate that in an rts. Its too rockpaperscisorrish.
