Best thing you'll see all week: Catastrophe

I have a problem with the first season of the UK sitcom Catastrophe. This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2017/02/21/best-thing-youll-see-week-catastrophe/

Thanks Tom, very nice review. You didn’t answer the question though whether she is more attractive than Sarah Palin ;)

Ha, I wondered if you’d bring that up. Before I started watching, your comment made me think it was some sort of post-apocalypse series with a badass heroine who resembled Sarah Palin. Imagine my disappointment.

Fortunately, it didn’t last. Because, yes, Sharon Horgan is beautiful and stately, and it’s kind of funny watching the show sort of pretend she’s plain Janish. But that’s TV for you. Beautiful people only, plz! However, I wouldn’t dream of making my avatar in a videogame look like Sharon Horgan. She’s not the kind of person who would shoot wolves from a helicopter. So Palin still has the edge there.

If any of you are interested in hearing an interview of the two main characters by Richard Herring (a British comedian) then check out this link:

Holy crap ain’t that the truth. That’s the last time I trust the critics at The A.V. Club.

So I guess this is an “Amazon Original Series” in the sense that they bought US streaming rights to it, rather than the “they funded and produced it” sense?

Oh, and I meant to mention that the music is terrible! Why is there Appalachian yodeling to wrap up every episode? Is that what they think Americans listen to?

That’s a good question. The Amazon credits are just tacked onto the beginning and end. I assumed it was a BBC4 production picked up by Amazon, but they do include it under the “Amazon originals” header.

Chappers, I can’t tell if that’s pre- or post-season two. I’m about to start the second season and don’t want any spoilerz!

-Tom

I believe it is pre series two so you should be fine.

Alex

It was on U.K. channel 4 originally which is not a BBC channel.

Oops, right. I actually knew that. Channels 3 and 4 are specifically NOT BBC. It’s weird that you guys have TV that isn’t BBC. What with you being a socialist country and all.

It will be interesting to hear your take on season two. I found it considerably less charming and I pretty much loved season one. But I do like You’re the Worst, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Actually, just the first season of that - it sucked once they decided to move in together.

Edit: Also, there is an existing Catastrophe thread if you want more discussion from back in the day.

…and watch Transparent. It is fantastic.

Yeah, I think it is, possibly in part because British comedies tend to be written by one or two people rather than a room. Off the top of my head, in addition to the ones you’ve already mentioned: Spaced, Jam, Black Books, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, Todd Margaret (basically a British show, even if it’s a co-production), Toast of London. Basically all the good comedy that wasn’t written by Graham Linehan or Armando Iannucci or Charlie Brooker. And that’s not counting sketch shows like Big Train and Smack the Pony.

Well, technically Channel 4 is also public sector. Though it doesn’t feel like it most of the time. And it has adverts.

You’re The Worst defense force, reporting for duty!

I liked Catastrophe, but didn’t love it. Didn’t love it enough to get around to the second season yet, and it’s not on my list for any time soon. But despite the jab at You’re the Worst, and not being as enamoured with Catastrophe as @tomchick is, I still really enjoyed that review!

Thanks for the review, and thanks, Alex for suggesting it. I hadn’t watched any of Catastrophe, but I’m fairly well charmed after two episodes.

Interesting article:

I loved that show. Can’t wait for season 3. Rob Delaney is great on twitter too.

Buddhist believe in necrogenesys. To have a baby you need to murder a person, so this person soul is transferred to the body of your children to reincarnate.

We finished the first season today. Loving it and excited to start the second.

The easy rapport between Rob and Sharon reminds me of the relationship between Aziz Ansari and Noel Wells in Master of None.
