For me, the movie was not about the rape, it was about the character as a whole, about how you can be seen as weak and empty and why and how you can transform into a very kind of superheroine, empowered female.

Which is taking the good from the genre, if there is a thing. Certainly making an empowered female heroine from the base is a great thing.

Of course a more cynical eye may say that they still have a an attractive woman in a belly shirt who gets raped and gets revenge, but in interviews they are saying words like “empowerment” to stave off the charges of exploitation: that nothing has changed since 1977 but the PR around the release and better production values.
