Why do I get a summer glau vibe from the baton vid?

Summer Glau twirling that baton would have been hotter.

Also, I have no idea why I’m giggling so much at the Joe Pesci video.

Why are you so sure?

No doubt it’s taken some time to teach them to paint, much the same as it takes some time to get humans to learn to paint beyond just smudging colors about. It seems clear to me that they understand what they are painting, and it’s more akin to painting what the art teacher suggests in an art class, than merely copying brush strokes. This is exactly how humans learn to be artists!

Do they pick their own topics? I’ve no idea, but wouldn’t rush to the knee jerk assumption that animals are stupid, and therefore humans must pick for them. Consider that your first assumption of a hoax appears to have been completely untrue…

Personally, I don’t understand the mindset that art must be a uniquely human thing. It reminds me strongly of the old fashion notion that animals have no capacity for language.

Holy cow, memorized or not, the elephant painting is impressive. A poster in the snopes forum added his personal photos: http://rpglab.net/troberg/gallery/view.php?gid=82

I would have thought those pictures were definite fakes.

Also, don’t forget that elephants are one of the few animals that seem to recognize themselves in mirrors. They may have some limited concept of self image, which would not surprise me. They are awesome animals.

Man I saw this somewhere and dismissed it thinking they were just going to mark up the canvas in crazy strokes. It’s incredible the elephant can control the paintbrush like that.

Try to get a typical 3 year old human to paint with that precision, even if you train and reward them.

Amazing.

Attractive anime chicks beating the shit out of each other.

There couldn’t possibly be an audience for this right?

BoHeman Rhapsody

It’s an old video, but How Not to Get Out of a Speeding Ticket

way old. predates youtube, I think.

I never said “animals are stupid”. I’m well aware of how smart elephants are. I also don’t have the mindset that “art is a human thing”, esp. since I don’t even really think art is a specific thing. I do think people tend to anthropomorphise in these situations, and greatly underestimate how good social animals are at reading subtle signals from trainers – for example, the famous horse that could “do math”.

My point is I’m skeptical elephants came up with these images themselves, and this seems to be born out by the signals the trainers are giving them. They were taught to paint particular pictures, and they do it well. What the elephants are doing here is plenty impressive, but I’d need to see some much more convincing proof to believe it’s an elephant who was taught to paint and then strolls up to the canvas and thinks “today I’m going to paint a self portrait, and heck, I’ll throw in a butterfly”.

not youtube but funny

Holy shit, he walked it off. My old football coach would love that dude.

I thought it was kinda funny until I realized she was pretty clearly schizophrenic, then it got kind of sad.
