They are both based on the book ‘Great Western Journey’, one of the ‘four great Chinese novels’. The advert uses the characters and some of the concepts, but is otherwise different.

Oddly, the TV series is Japanese.

I actually know the book as ‘Monkey’ (read the Waley translation, which is abridged), and ‘Great Western Journey’ was the translation a friend gave me. He’s Cantonese, 'though, so it might be slightly different for him.
