But the guy we’re talking about is a huge film nerd, so he should know these names too. I think where the directors come from is pretty irrelevant.

I’d also add as at least “Interesting female directors who’ve done at least two good movies”: Nicole Holofcener, Kimberley Pierce, Lisa Cholodenko, Mary Harron, Catherine Breillat, Kasi Lemmons, Sally Potter…and I’ll add Miranda July, because I love Me and You and Everyone We Know a great deal.

So Great

Is he? He has insight into the creative process, but it doesn’t mean he has breadth and depth of knowledge about film history. A lot of the filmmakers he listed are popularized from repetition and pop culture exposure*, they’ve had long celebrated careers and mostly straddle the line between the mainstream and avante-garde.

Or maybe he does have that breadth and depth, but chose a list based on what his audience (sci-fi nerds, not necessarily “Film Nerds”) will most likely be exposed to. I know who most of those people are and I’m more of a half-assed film nerd wannabe and maybe he wanted to be inclusive with regard to his audience for that particular joke. It’s certainly necessary for the joke to work (ie, you need to understand he isn’t just listing hacks).

I think where the directors come from is pretty irrelevant.

You mistook my meaning. My point is about the gender bias of celebrated directors in the US. You could also criticize him for focusing mainly on Western directors too. Did he mention Ozu or Kurosawa? What about Korean directors? Park Chan-Wook is about the only one I can name. Del Toro about the only Spanish speaking director I can name off hand. What about indonesian directors? Or Brazilian directors? Etc. My point is what sticks in people’s minds is generally what’s been popularized by the media at large because repetition works and within the US that’s been mostly male, western, directors. Tom reaching for foreign female directors is shifting the context of the discussion.

*For example, I can actually quote more lines from Kubrick movies than Bigelow’s movies even though I’ve seen Point Break, Near Dark, and Strange Days. I enjoyed the latter two quite a bit, but it’s Kubrick that ends up being the basis for many people’s jokes (“My God, it’s full of stars”, “Here’s Johnny!”, etc). So is he sexist for wanting to have a list of accessible directors to make the joke work or is the sexism more systemic that directors that tend to be celebrated over time happen to be men?

Poor Lina Wertmüller, forgotten by history. I wonder if Criterion is planning on releasing Seven Beauties anytime soon.

I thought about Wertmuller, but I’ve only ever seen Swept Away.

You guys should make a “female directors” thread or something.

Now you have forced me to post a video of the Peepsmobile to increase the ratio of videos to yappery. :D

Sorry about that. I just thought it was kind of ridiculous criticizing a jokey star wars review for a lack of female directors given in the examples.

No worries, I am just sad that people missed the glory that is MacGyver cat.

Anyone else hate that annoying as fuck Gap Kids ad? Some schlubby guys did a reenactment of it!

Since Athryn is sad this got lost in the arguing, another chance.

It’s cute.

Aww, I think those girls are cute.

But these guys were pretty funny.

The screaming bit is my favorite in both …

Lois Lane, World’s Greatest Journalist.

The innuendo is bad, but yowsa.

That’s awesome.

This isn’t so much a video as it is an 8-bit audio rendition of an Opeth Song: The Grand Conjuration.

There’s a whole slew of songs adapted to ‘8 bit’ on the related links section (Slayer & Behemoth tracks among others), but of all the ones I listened to this one is the best adaption. I would like to play a Castlevania game with this sound track.

Doggy Christmas Surprise

Not the best video, but cute enough, and the dogs are pretty impressive for house dogs.

Grand Theft Bulldozer

Well, this just seems like a scenario that might be right from the GTA games.

That’s too bad, he has some good insights

Is it even necessary? I mean, yeah, we get it, lots of people don’t like the prequels. Maybe next he can talk about airplane food or how white people dance.

I was going to say this, but wanted someone else to say it. So, thanks!

What the hell? How did this not make national news for like a whole week?

They didn’t want any copycat incidents?
