Thanks, Jean! Interesting singing technique. It’s easy to see where the idea for the growling version came from. Maybe Satchmo was clowning that time for some reason. If he really always sang like that, I don’t know what to think.

Well, it was 1968, and he was black. And the song was intended to be an antidote to the racially-charged times. So there were probably a lot of emotions behind his singing… not all of them happy.

Baring teeth is a sign of aggression, you know?

As for him clearing his throat and growling… well, he was old.
