My local Circuit City was sold out, as were Best Buy (who said they only got 8 copies in) and Target. Managed to snag the last one on the shelf at Meijer. The retail drones all seemed completely baffled at how many people were coming in wanting copies.
Saw plenty of 'em for the PC, though.
Everyone on my friends list just now was playing Bioshock. Except Andrew Mayer, 'cause he’s an iconoclast.
Picked up my limited. The Big Daddy figurine looks cheap through the little window, the “soundtrack” is a Mini-CD of fuckin MOBY songs, and I’m probably never going to watch the making of DVD.
So should I:
-Hawk it right now, still sealed, on eBay for cost + the cost of a standard Bioshock, thus getting me Bioshock free?
-Open it, play it, hawk the whole special edition later when I’m done with the game despite it being unsealed and the mania dying down?
-Keep it sealed, hawk it later, buy a regular copy from Circuit City for $10 cheaper than retail?
-Shit bonerz?
Starting half an hour ago, after repeated Steam crashes forcing a reboot, a few more crashes and then a couple of “Please try again in a few minutes” errors I finally got my preloaded game ostensibly decrypted, only to be surprised to see it go into a “Downloading: 80%” state. It’s averaging ~40 KB/s but it’s been stuck at 80% for nearly ten minutes now.
Was there some kind of patch or is this more of the decryption/authorization process? Maybe I need to kill it and reboot again. Edit: never mind, it’s at 81% at last, although I still don’t know what it’s downloading.
Ugh. Two hours later, still at 93%.
The big daddy really is pretty awesome. It’s not a cheap plastic action figure, it’s a resin statue. Feels like resin, at any rate, and it has the characteristic texture pattern on the soles of the feet. It’s sturdy and very well detailed, though mine, at least, lacked any painting for the portholes of the head - they’re just the same gold/brass color as the rest of the head.

my big daddy’s drill bit was busted. waiting for 2k to update the “busted” page so I can fill out my form. For now it’s on display by the 360. Dove right into the game after a brief skim through the manual. It’s fun, I love the audio diaries and thanks Tom for the tip w/ the map. A little annoyed with the enemy re-spawning. Stay clear dagnabbit.
Mine doesn’t have any porthole paintings either. The picture on the box suggests it’s supposed to be like that, though…
You get a free artbook, though, if your figure is busted (as well as a free replacement figure, shipping included).
If I do open this, I kind of hope mine’s broken. Maybe it’ll have an “accident.”

Uh, if it’s in the manual can it really be a spoiler?
The very tip of the drill bit on mine was chipped off, but it’s nothing a little superglue won’t fix. I’ve heard of others where the drill or entire arm had come right off, though.

This is how mine came too. Tip of drill busted off, not a big deal compared to some of the pics of severely wounded daddy statues on Neogaf.
Yes. Yes it can.
For example, the Chulip manual tells you most of the game. Also, the Day of the Tentacle manual.

I’m about 4 levels in, and the charm is wearing off abit. The controls are the biggest issue for me, I’m having a hard time switching from weapons to plasmids and back again in quick succession. I’ve died more times then I can remember at this point and I found some great ways to exploit it to kill big daddies. . The problem with the controls is keeping me from performing most strategies since by the time I switch to the attack I want it’s too late to do anything.
Also the damage rate is a bit weird, the pistol seems to do more damage then the shotgun or machine gun, and the machine gun firing rate is off. I hear the gunshot but there isn’t any bullets coming out.

The LE is pretty crappy - I wish they would’ve shelled out for a tin box, but the statue is totally awesome. The game is too.
I’m kind of use to the controls now. i can switch between power and weapons fairly quickly. However I can’t switch between different kinds of ammo quickly and that feature ends up being kind of useless.
The trick with the different kinds of ammo is to have different weapons loaded with different types of damage. It’s faster to change weapons than it is ammo. So once you get a spread of weapons and plasmids available, you can always have a particular type of damage quickly available.
As for exploits to kill Big Daddys, I didn’t really see any. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they got around. They’re big fellas, but I only saw one instance of one of them getting stuck. He was a Bouncer pinned behind a Little Sister on a narrow staircase, so he couldn’t reach me. I took advantage of that fact. I’m not proud of myself.

Non-spoiler question: When you search an item and 3 things show up, is it possible to NOT pick them all up? (ie- select things individually?)

I don’t think so, no. Why would you want to?

Vis a vis the widescreen issues, Ken Levine took the time to acknowledge the concern on the 2K boards this evening:
Hey guys-
Sorry about all the conflict. IG development people (specifically Chris and Rowan who are both on vacation) were trying to take a day off today (we’ve been working about six months 6-7 days a week). I’m trying to see what everybody’s concerns are and consult with the staff.
I know people are frustrated, but we are dealing with internet time here. It wasn’t until 7 pm EST that I was able to even talk to anybody in our Australian studio, which is open today (9 AM their time).
I hear you that not everybody was thrilled with the PC launch. And I’m trying to collect information and see what the facts are. PC game development does not function in a matter of seconds or hours, especially when most of the team is on vacation. But I hear you, and we’re looking into the issue. I’ll only ask you have a bit of understanding as to the time scale that software development issues must occur in.
Best regards,
Ken Levine
I’m pretty impressed. Most developers wouldn’t even think about addressing this kind of a concern for several weeks, let alone on what must be a crazy release day.
So I had a totally awesome moment. Which I guess maybe wasn’t random and was scripted so removed.

Well, sometimes you don’t want the food that drains your health, for instance.
