Yeah. But I said way back in this thread (don’t worry, I don’t expect anyone to remember) that I don’t play FPS games, usually (I don’t like the genre). I played for the atmosphere, setting, and story, not for the gameplay. If it was any harder, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as I did.

Yeah I can understand that.
Is this in the PC version? 'Cause I’m all up to date and stuff on the 360 and I don’t see that option. I think it used to be there, but now it isn’t.
It’s not really a big deal, I just have to get zoomed to a vita chamber after I die before I can reload.
Oh, this was on the 360 version. Has there been another patch recently that removed this option? I haven’t played it in a while…
I’m curious about this as well… BlueJackalope got me hankerin’ for Bioshock again, so I’m gearing up for a 2nd full run. I’m also looking forward to grabbing the last few achievements.
But when I went in to turn off the vita-chambers, the option appears to be gone with the latest patch. Also, there used to be an achievement for finishing with difficulty on hard without the chambers (which appears to be gone as well), but now there are three ‘secret’ achievements.
Anyone know if I run through on hard and just load after getting killed, will this still active the vita-chamber off achievement (assuming that’s still one of them)?
Thanks.

I don’t even have a 360, but I’m 99.9% positive that when the achievement was released alongside the patch option, they said that you can leave the option on and reload if you died.
Did people who got the brass balls achievement lose it, or was the weight of the achievement reduced?

I just checked on xbox.com and my brass balls achievement still exists with the same point value. There is no new achievements listed either. I haven’t actually touched the game since whatever new patch released though…
Eurogamer’s mixed review of the new Bioshock challenge room DLC for the PS3 makes me wonder: Are we going to get this DLC for the PC any time soon? I’d be very interested.

Rezzing in this thread because it is so large (size matters).
I recently started playing Bioshock on the XBox 360. This is my first playthrough of the game at all, although I did noodle a bit with the demo way back in the day. I just want to say that this game is fucking spectacular. I haven’t enjoyed a FPS this much in a long time, possibly since Thief 2 on the PC. I’d call this game on par with HL1 in terms of awesomeness in historical context.
Having now thoroughly played it (I am about halfway through Cohen’s art section), when I saw the Bioshock 2 teaser, I just about peed myself with jittery excitement. Like, on par with Dead Rising 2 jittery self-peeing excitement. Man, what a great game.
It’s great to see someone unaffected (so far) by the Bioshock backlash. After you finish the game, be sure to drop by the spoilers thread and let us know your take on the things that happen near the end of the game.
I never felt any backlash against Bioshock. I love that game.
Same here. But if you look at that spoiler thread, the backlash phase started from around Page 10 onwards. I finished the game much later than everyone else, so reading that thread was an interesting historical look at the different reactions people had.
Whenever anyone doesn’t like a popular or critically acclaimed game their response is labeled as backlash (and certainly this phenomenon isn’t limited to games). Obviously no one could possibly find legitimate flaws in Bioshock – they just don’t like it because other people do.
No backlash from me. Bioshock is high on my list of favorite games ever.
I don’t think the answer is on either extreme, but somewhere in the middle. There are the group of people who completely love the game, and give it high marks early on. Then there are the group of people who go into a game/movie/book/etc. with much higher expectations, which does influence their judgment a lot. And then there are those with real grievances who don’t care about the high scores and praise something got. But there are just so many people who write “Yeah, it was a good game, but a 10/10? That’s ridiculous”. That sort of thing. That particular branch of reactions, I would attribute to a backlash. A lot of the grievances these people have isn’t just with the game, but with the game reviewers and publications that raised their expectations so high that they couldn’t be met by the game.
Steve Bauman also had a great blog entry last year on people’s propensity for cynicism in message board culture: Cynic City.
So is it all backlash? Well, no, obviously it isn’t, and it would be ridiculous to suggest so. But is there a backlash there that wouldn’t be there if the game had gotten universally lower review scores? Yes.

I claim backlash. The first 90% of the game was pretty good, but the last 10% was handled so poorly that it knocked the game down a few notches. But I bitched enough about that ages ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the twist though.
Damn.
Well have not played it at all.
But did buy it for $4.99 on Steam’s excellent sale.
And just finished Fallout 3 (need to redo and explore more)
hmm. Might be my next game. Installing a Xtreme Gamer SB Audio card on Saturday and nuking the PC. So maybe after I am back up will play this game.
Should be interesting. Not a real FPS player.
