I went home recently and a friend’s parents started going off about how Obama “bowed” to a foreign leader. Ugh.

The conservative psyche is an interesting thing. The same people who worship at the altar of the state/flag will accuse liberals of deifying Obama. It’s a really bizarre form of projection.
The call to the pledge was some straight up scary nationalist work.
One of the better polisci profs that I had asserted that this is a general American trait, not just a right-wing one. Even mainstream Americans (and some left-wingers) worship the Constitution as if it’s holy writ, rather than just a piece of paper. In a thread not too long ago, one of the posters exhibited a particularly ridiculous strain of this worship, but he was merely an extreme version of what many people really do believe.
The liberals are worshiping at the altar of a rival God. Their reaction seems perfectly natural to me, given their starting point.

For most of the people who are complaining I don’t think this is really about the birther movement.
