Blair's speech to Congress

gamers/gamers, you know the drill:

NY Times link.

say what you will, but this is pretty great:

Can you imagine Bush saying that? The problem would not be with the big words, sine there aren’t really big words. I think he would just have a problem getting from one end of one of those sentences to the other, with all their clauses, without losing his place and forgetting what the proper intonation should be.

It was a pretty good speech. Blair can really deliver.

The press conference, on the other hand, was awful.

Very good speech indeed. Lots of good points as well.

To be a serious partner, Europe must take on and defeat the anti- Americanism that sometimes passes for its political discourse. And what America must do is show that this is a partnership, built on persuasion, not command. (Applause.) Then the other great nations of our world, and the small, will gather around in one place, not many, and our understanding of this threat will become theirs.

Great point, and one I can only hope Bush and Europe will take to heart (not likely).

In Mexico in September, the world should unite and give us a trade round that opens up our markets. I’m for free trade, and I’ll tell you why: because we can’t say to the poorest people in the world, “We want you to be free, but just don’t try to sell your goods in our market.” (Applause.) And because ever since the world started to open up, it has prospered.

Another point I hope Congress and Bush take to heart. Sounds like Blair is wanting a world wide version of NAFTA. Something like this would never make it through Congress, but it just seems like the right thing to do.

I would trade leaders gladly in a heartbeat.

I’d throw in a first round draft pick plus future considerations as well.

I wouldn’t know which is worse.

Still, you guys don’t see the general asshatery he and his government is involved in on a daily basis so it’s pretty easy to like the guy when he comes over and makes a few speeches you like the sound of.

I know what you mean cyborg, but honestly, Bush jr. must be the worst leader to ever disgrace a democratic country. Blairs inadequacies pale in comparison.

Its not just the speeches as of late. It is the way he handles himself on a daily basis. We get TV of him when he is over there with you, ya know.

Much of the sentiment of support shown towards Blair is based on his handling of this ordeal since the US and the Brits jumped in together. He has a knack for conveying his message and seeming genuine when doing it. Bush, IMO, does genuinely believe in and care a lot about what he is doing, but comes off as an inept politician almost every time that mic is placed in front of him on a dias.

The fact that McMaster is getting involved in political discussions, however, makes me think that I should repent because the end of the world is pretty fucking nigh.
