It’s an item used to level up in the covenant. Dark Souls 3 did similar things. You get them for helping people out with bosses (or being helped by a League member; I got one from the BSB fight so presumably my helper was a league member) and crushing them levels you join the convenant giving you whatever rewards.
What does it mean to level up in a covenant? Do your stats go up or something?

No, you eventually (it doesn’t take that many vermin overall) get a gesture and a helmet and a hunter tool.

Welp, I managed to panic run my way to all three pieces of the constable set in the hunter’s nightmare, and I’ve now fulfilled my original character concept and can get back to actually playing the game:
Very nice!
How did you get a screenshot in the day time? How high do you have the brightness turned up? That’s cheating! I bet you don’t have to use either a torch or a hand lamp like you’re meant to use in most areas.

Are there any other weapons in the main game besides the starting weapons? I found something like a firearms spear… Should I level it up? There are almost no new weapons to be found…
I’ve only found 3 other weapons. One is that Whirligig saw in the Old Hunters expansion area. I also found that Spear Saw that you’re talking about, and last night I also found something called a Tonitrus. So that’s the starting 3 weapons, and then 3 other weapons that I found.
You can also buy some from the vendors if you have enough blood echoes. In my other game I bought the Kirkhammer from the vendor. I think the vendor also has other weapons available in my current game, but I haven’t bothered looking.
Between the DLC and the main game, there’s supposed to be 26 weapons total. But other than the starting 3 and the Kirkhammer, I think you find most of the rest pretty late in the game.

There’s the saw spear in the sewers of Central Yharnam, the rifle spear that you found, the Kirkhammer and Ludwig’s Holy Blade (which I used for almost the entirety of my last playthrough and see is still very popular if the myriad ghosts that go by carrying it are any guide) can both be purchased pretty early on if you got the badges that unlock the ability to purchase them from the messenger bath. The Kirkhammer one is I think unavoidable, although I have never cared much for that weapon.
Perversely it is daytime or something close to it in the Hunter’s Nightmare. I assure you it is still way too damned dark in plenty of places in the game.

Do you know what ending you’re going for, @Rock8man
As discussed in this thread, I can’t make heads or tails of the story, so I guess the ending doesn’t matter to me. I guess my answer would be, any ending that I can finish.

I don’t know if you know, but if you’re at the pigs, you’re very near the end.
Well, doing the DLC area finally got me back into that state which I hate: running out of blood vials. It hadn’t happened yet in this playthrough because I’d stayed out of the DLC until now for the most part. I actually think the rest of the game outside the DLC is pretty well balanced in terms of giving the player approximately the right amount of blood vials so you always have some in reserve. But once you go to the DLC area, that shifts. And now I found myself fighting hunters in the area after Ludwig and my blood vials ran out. D’oh!
I did a run to get the pigs, and died once. Got all my blood echoes back on the second run, and went back and was able to buy over 100 blood vials! Holy Moon Sword Batman! Now that’s what I’m talking about! No more spending hours in the library 2nd floor trying to get more blood echoes in order to buy blood vials.

The pigs are also a very good source of vials. They usually drop 3 or 4 I think.
I did not know that.
So then, what about the other Nightmare area, the one with the river of poison? I haven’t explored that one at all in this playthrough. Is that whole area optional?

Yes, and you better believe this time around I am opting out.
Anyhoo, without specifically aiming for the third ending there’s practically no way you could stumble on it, so it’ll come down to how you answer a question that gets put to you which one you get!

I should have been more specific that those were endgame spoilers and the tags were meant for you, sorry!
Bloodborne makes the signature Demon’s/Dark Souls poison swamp area completely optional. How thoughtful.
Do they make it worth it to go in there? Is there some really fantastic thing that awaits in there if you do manage to make it all the way through?
It is required for one of the upper tier chalice dungeons which the boss their drops.
Main issue with Nightmare Frontier is it’s large with lots of optional side areas to explore. If you need to explore every nook it’s hellish and will take a while. Knowing the path forward and making a bee-line there would make the area a lot shorter. Also welcome to your first encounter with the worst enemy in the game. You will surely die here.
