I thought the speech was pretty good. Boris has a lot of charisma. He’s entering a massively toxic political environment though. It’s going to be a tough battle to deliver Brexit.

A majority of the conservative party membership voted in Boris, but the conservative party itself is apparently about to lose it’s parliamentary majority.

So there is a long long chain between some people in a (potential) minority party (or bare majority in parliament) electing Boris Johnson to the rest of the country being full of racists.

I am far more interested in what Boris can and can’t do to push forward Brexit. If the Guardian is right, his hands are tied and Brexit is pretty mch dad in the water, at least a no deal brexit, and definitely no deal by October brexit.

It’s my (faint, naive?) hope that Boris is so unpalatable to various politicians that a general election has to be called, and that the lib Dem (and others, anti brexit alliance) make some solid gains and reverse the process.

I’m not so sure. The Guardian is a bastion of Remain. At this point I think they’re about as trustworthy as the Telegraph - which is to say, only really good enough for rhetoric and bias.

I think whatever happens next - the fight is going to be bloody and brutal, a real knife fight (politically, not physically ofc) :)

One thing that I hope will happen next is that Boris will fill his cabinet with hardcore Leave supporters (ERG + friends). It’s at least a step in the right direction.

I think it’s strange that before this whole Brexit thing most people in my circle quite liked Boris - even the Remainers. He was the funny, likable guy on HIGNFY. Who know’s what he’ll be able to achieve though. Parliamentary arithmetic has not changed.

Well at least we’ll get more laughs than during May’s reign.

Even though I will feel a hard Brexit pretty badly (I’m Dutch), somehow I feel a hard Brexit is the only way the people in the UK to realize what the benefits are of being part of the EU.

Hopefully the Tory party will split and the UK will get a proper multi party system. That is the only silver ligning I see happening out of this mess.
