How’s that bounce working out? :)
To be fair, not all that much can be read from this: the incumbent was convicted of falsifying an expenses claim and forced to a by-election by his constituents. The Tories nominated him again anyway. The strong Remain parties fielded one candidate between them.
Still, that’s a 24 point swing. Oh, and UKIP’s so dead it was beaten by the Monster Raving Loony Party.
It’s a tough read; that seat has been LibDem historically. It’s hard to know how to infer much from single by-elections.
Of course, I’m still happy.
Am I the only American who tried really hard to figure out what ‘Brecon’ is an abbreviation for?
I’d vote for them if they were in my area. Every time.
As far as I know it isn’t.
For me it’s synonymous with climbing snowdon. Which is fun.
Oh, I eventually realized that it is a place name. It just sounds like some modern abbreviation. Like, you know, brexit.
Brecon and Snowdon are over 80 miles from each other.
I know. I just lump them all together.

But isn’t “Brexit” just the latest in a long long long line of English/Anglo-Saxon abbreviations? I mean the whole country is rife with the legacy of abbreviations: Sussex for South Saxons, Wessex for West Saxons and so forth and so on. Most towns with “ham” in the name were “hamlet” at one time, right? Etc.
Brexit is (lexicographically) a direct descendant of Grexit.
Farage isnt even bothering with dogwhistles/crypto-racism any more.
and this weeks Bus Racist (or in the case, tube racist) shows there’s still some heroes out there

LOVE the guy who gets in his face. That would be me if I were aparty to that situation.
My god, these fucking people.
“Brexit will cause the Irish to abandon the EU and join the UK, which will be better for them because they really need help from we British.”
Not the first time I’ve seen colonialist ambitions, and it wont be the last. They all need to be fed leopard whisker stew.

Leave figures are now saying that a no deal Brexit cannot be stopped. Apparently it could only be stopped by a VONC followed by a MOC in a Remain supporting MP who would then become a caretaker PM.
I assume this means:
a) Boris’s advisers have crunched the numbers and they see no majority for a caretaker PM
b) They actually want no deal to be prevented so they can go into a GE and use it as part of their campaign
c) This is a bluff for the EU’s benefit to try and force them to reopen the WA
(The link is paywalled but I’ll quote the relevant parts)
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/08/03/dominic-cummings-tells-mps-missed-chance-stop-no-deal-brexit/
Dominic Cummings told ministers and officials that the Prime Minister will honour his October 31 pledge even if Jeremy Corbyn and pro-Remain Conservatives succeed in forcing a general election.
If Mr Johnson loses a no-confidence vote when the Commons returns in September, potentially leading to a general election, the Prime Minister would have the power to schedule the GE for after Halloween
“They don’t realise that if there is a no-confidence vote in September or October, we’ll call an election for after the 31st and leave anyway”

It’s all just speculation but…
To try and get the EU to renegotiate May’s deal to make it sufficiently palatable that it could get through Parliament. I think this is highly unlikely as the ERG have said they’ll vote down a deal even if the backstop is removed. However, the EU apparently has a history of making deals at the last possible moment so it might still be possible.
Any plan based on the EU removing the backstop is a fantasy or a lie.
Sky’s Faisal Islam had a good thread on this.
I very much doubt you could sensibly have a government that had just lost the confidence vote pushing through an irreversible policy like this.
