I think this understates it. Didn’t the Leave campaign make it clear that there would be a deal? In fact, weren’t voters encouraged to believe that people already in the UK would be allowed to stay, that the UK would stay in the customs union, etc?

Cambridge now.

Yes absolutely, I forgot to add that! We had repeated assurances from these lying bastards that no-deal (and proroguing) was untenable.

If I recall correctly the leave deal was a bed of roses with champagne and money saved.

Leaving would be easy, the EU would be bending over backwards to accommodate us, other countries would be fighting to sign trade deals, and none of our rights would be affected, and the economy was going to boom too.

Speaking of that last, regarding fisheries :

This thread is interesting as some of the posters have correctly identified the nature of seasonal picking means Brits would not and could not never do the job. Even if the much vaunted forced wage rise ever happened.

The problem isnt the wages. It’s that it’s short term seasonal. You might have months work at one farm picking one crop and then have to move across the county to do another crop without any guarantee of work when you get there.

Settled Brits arent going to move around the country for short term work.

Also unemployed Brits arent going to come off benefits for a few weeks work when they would have to wait 6 weeks without any money returning to UC.

Seasonal work like this is untenable for local populations. Not unless the pay is so good it can cover the potential shortfall workers would face in having to roam the British countryside looking for work.

I tried fruit picking when i was younger, granted i had fewer living expenses then, but the sheer effort of planning your life around that type of work made it simply untenable. I took a lower paying job that was permanent and in one location. And id make the same choice every time.

Also lots of these farms are in the middle of fucking nowhere, and our public transport system is an embarassment.

The few Lexiters that are exhorting Brexit as increasing wages and costs in the farm sector are the ones deploring the cost of food and that people are being forced to food banks. There seems to be a fundamental lack of understanding from Brexiters across the spectrum.

btw if you add www.masstagger.com to chrome you’ll find the nastiest of the Brexiters are posting in the worst of alt right/far right reddit. The anti-women subreddits, the anti-LGBT subreddits, the “classical liberal” reddits where you can rant about non-whites if you dont use slurs etc Its no coindence that the dregs of socmedia shit all over every thread. Its a useful tool for reddit. You know just who to avoid and identifying dogwhistles and crypto-racism.

This is exactly the same problem that Farmers have in America. It’s not just that it’s back breaking labor for low wages, but that the migrant aspect of harvesting crops makes it impossible for most Americans to do. Or rather, they’re entirely unwilling to live that kind of migrant lifestyle, no matter what you pay them.

Yeah, fishing is going to be a massive battle ground. Just think of how much trouble this has caused over the last century between UK fishers and other countries (e.g., the Cod Wars) - and that despite the existence of the EU over the past couple of years.

The EU has already flagged an agreement on fishing rights as one of the key prerequisites for the UK getting any kind of trade deal. I doubt the UK’s fishermen are going to be pleased with the final result.

Secretaries of State repeatedly misled the House and its committees over the extent and existence of Brexit sector analyses reports

The government prolonged the current parliamentary session over two years, so that there would not be a Queen’s Speech

The government packed committees with Tory majorities, even though it is a hung parliament, by procedural sleight of hand

The government repeatedly ignored and did not even participate in votes on opposition motions

And then disregarded the motions passed

The government sought to make the Article 50 notification without any parliamentary approval whatsoever, and forced litigation to go all the way to the Supreme Court so that parliament could have that approval

The government committed itself to billions of pounds of public expenditure in a blatant bribe to the DUP for support in a supply and confidence vote

The government repeatedly sought to circumvent or abuse the Sewell convention in its dealings with the devolved administrations

The government sought to legislate for staggeringly wider “Henry VIII powers” so that it could legislate and even repeal Acts without any recourse to parliament

The government became the first administration in parliamentary history to be held to be in contempt of parliament

The government stood by when there were attacks on the independent judiciary and the independent civil service

“Enemies of the People”

“Traitors”

The government deliberately broke the pairing convention, in respect of an MP on maternity leave, so that the the government could win a vote

The government gave serious consideration to blocking a duly passed Bill from obtaining Royal Assent

The government has now locked the doors of parliament for five weeks in the crucial run-up to a no deal Brexit, just to avoid scrutiny and adverse legislation

Today a senior cabinet minister refused to commit the government to complying with any laws passed by parliament

And the response of government supporters to anyone disturbed by this pattern of increasingly serious constitutional wrongs?

“Hysterical”

But these concrete examples show there is something serious to be worried about

Something bad is happening, and it has to be stopped

Take back control indeed.

Sounds just like Americans’ Republican Party.

Since when is habeas corpus spelled like that?

Luv 2 deport residents of 20 years :) :)

It’s going to be an explosive week in politics. Here’s an overview that describes what will happen next.

Also the government have said they will deselect any MP who votes against them to block no deal.

What does “deselect” mean for us colonials? Is it like losing your committee assignments?

Kicked out of the party, I think.

They won’t be selected as candidates for their party at the next election.

It’s basically the ultimate threat a party can produce towards their MPs. Disobeying a three line whip always carries the risk, but it’s not been treated seriously this Parliament - it would mean throwing away what little majority exists.

So it’s more of Johnson trying to get Parliament to trigger a GE.

Luckily we now have a leaked report from the government, about the viability of all these alternative arrangements.

However, the damning report shows there is no single deliverable solution at present, despite the fact Johnson is almost a third of the way through the “30 days” target that the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, gave him to come up with a fresh border proposal.

The report said: “It is evident that every facilitation has concerns and issues related to them. The complexity of combining them into something more systemic and as part of one package is a key missing factor at present.”

Perhaps Draxen can demonstrate why he believes they are viable, and he’s not just a Brexiter lying his fucking face off, like every single other fucking Brexiter on the planet. As far as im concerned, the Brexiters who arent just thick fucking Sun reading low IQ idiots know there are no working plans amd that there will be no working plans and just insist there will be, because they want the darkies out and a far right nationalist government in place to enact their racist plans and policies and they gleefully will want to see No Deal chaos and suffering imposed on others.

I’ll assume Draxen doesnt fall in the “thick fucking Sun reading idiot” category as he can string together a sentence made up of multi-syllable words on this forum.

Honestly, these people need to be dangling from Westminster Bridge. They are monsters. They are prepared to, and WILL kill people to get what they want. Best 100 of these fascist vermin hang than 100,000 innocents die.
