It takes a good guy with a narwhal tusk to stop a bad guy with a knife.

The terrorist was in prison for terrorism offences but released early and was wearing an electronic tag.

tbh if someone leaked a document showing he was being fed subliminal messages just before being released I wouldn’t be surprised but thats just crazy talk as we dont live some kind of dystopian far right nationalist state controlled by immoral robber barons who would run an underhand dirty tricks propaganda campaign in a General Election, do we.

Edit: I don’t know if it was narwhal hero, fire extinguisher hero or another but one of the heroes was a murderer on day release from prison

I have so many questions!

James Ford, 42, was sentenced to life in prison in 2004 for the murder of 21-year-old Amanda Champion who was found strangled and with her throat cut in Ashford, Kent in July 2003.

It is understood that Ford is in the final days of his sentence at HMP Standford Hill, an open prison in Kent.

How do you get to be in your “final days” of a life sentence?

What is an “open prison”?

Is there some kind of halfway-house program in Britain where murderers are put into niche trades like narwhal tusk salespersons?

A life sentence in the UK isn’t quite what it sounds like. It’s for life in theory but comes with an attached minimum term before becoming eligible for parole and early release. Generally around 15-25 years for murder. A very few individuals (serial killers mostly) will never be eligible for release.

An open prison is sort of a bit like a halfway house. It’s still a prison, but you can be outside the walls during the day, with restrictions. It’s for people who have served most of their sentence and are expected to be reformed enough not to cause trouble. And of course if they do cause trouble they’ll be straight back into more normal prison. The idea is that it’s a first step towards rehabilitation into normal society.

Yeah I saw the footage of the guy being taken out.

No fucking around from the Police there.

Like this guy or not, this is a valid point, and one tactic we see being used all the time by so many people, not just politicians.

Harmless examples in online discourse would be immediately labelling someone a troll because of a different point of view.

I’ve had that happen several times!

Now, I can’t comment on IL’s bona fides, and it would be totally in character for a

to bring it up.

But the fact remains that any sort of normal debate is being shouted down hardcore.

I’ve had people immediately verbally abuse me for

  • being a remoaner millennial fragile snowflake who is also selfish.

  • for being a paki.

Which makes me chuckle and grimace at the same time when I recall

  • I went to Afghanistan and very nearly died. One doesn’t quickly (or ever I imagine) forget the feel of bullets whizzing past one’s head in a hurry (although bullets are by definition always in a hurry?:D)

  • and I am mixed race, from Kenya, and know almost nothing about Pakistan.

I fear for the level of discourse in our politics too, when there was a clip shared upthread with Rees-Mogg essentially doing the posh version of this shut down, iirc.

edit:

I’d totally vote for the ice sculpture

There was a prisoner rehabilitation conference where the terrorist and murderer were attending on a day release in a building right by London Bridge. One of the victims was a conference organiser.

The tusk came from the nearby Fishermongers guild hall. Johnson breaking purdah rules using the occasion to promote Conservative policies on law and crime.

And apparently wielded by one of those horrible Polish persons that the Brexiteers are so afraid of.

A Polish Lancer, as it were.

Does that make him a hussar?

I’d like to point out I was using actual facts, and @Incendiary_Lemon as usual was grotesquely warping history to try to prove his point. When it became apparent he was wrong, did he own up or continue said discussion? Or did he deflect or change the subject?

Seeing a fascist constantly abuse history to push their selfish ideology, especially when said policies hurt innocent people, puts me into protect mode. I know it’s a really bad flaw, and sometimes I’m not very nice about it.

I don’t think he was accusing you so much as bemoaning the current state of dialog in the UK, which is pretty much exactly as he describes, with both the brexiteers and the Corbynites using aggressive, mob tactics to silence dissenting voices within their spaces.

Yup. Not just UK.

All a bit depressing to be honest.

That said, I am getting good at deflecting the covnersation through saying things such as:

That’s interesting,
What do you think?
Tell me more.
Thanks for sharing.
Have you seen the news recently?

or similar whenever the conversation becomes political. And just umm occasionally. You’d be amazed how many people really don’t want to have a conversation and just want to say their piece and be done.

Oh I wasn’t having a go at you, not by any means!

Here is some good reading to answer your questions!

Utter shit engages in shithousery

I wouldnt even cross the road to piss on that c*** if he was on fire and I had a raging bladder infection and eaten 3 pounds of asparagus. The only way I would if i could piss petrol.

Meanwhile, in this entirely Tory generated disaster, Corbyn decides its a good time to roll out some reap the whirlwind comments.

I know, in the context of a political discussion board, we all know the factors fuelling terrorism, from Western military intervention to Salafist funding and expansion to corruption and lack of democracy, but in a General Election where the idiocracy are already thoroughly polarised around nationalism, scapegoating, racism, immigration and Islamophobia, is this, and lets boil it down to how the majority of the country will see this, “It’s your fault” be the best approach?

All he had to do was condemn the attacks and early release and shut up for 2 weeks.

I mean, it was probably one of his aides rather than the PM himself.

Is there no constituency in the UK for maybe we should stop bombing the shit out of people? Because that would be depressing.

The “it’s all the West’s fault” vote is sewn up by him already. The idea is you don’t want the floating voters wondering what Jezbollahs historical position on his good friends terrorist groups actually is.

The Tories turn their racist campaigning up to 11

Archive link. No money to that Nazi Rothermere.

Except much of the work is in London and trump is basically nothing to do with it. And the nhs will only buy the output if it actually helps people. But let’s not get facts get in the way of a nationalist rant.
