“Presumed suicide oh and we’re classifying the files for 70 years.”

I’m not the only person who found the entire affair suspect.

The EHRC investigation is approaching finalisation.

The JLM submission has been leaked, all 28,000 words of it. It was put together by 70 Labour staff members who turned whistleblower.

You can see why Labour have been making noises about shutting down the EHRC.

Could you post your source for this? In their recent manifesto:

We have already committed to: […]

  • Enhance the powers and functions of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, making it truly independent, to ensure it can support people to effectively challenge any discrimination they may face.

“making it truly independent”

Oh come on.

There’s never been any issues with left and EHRC until now. You think they are going to write “shut it down because it’s controlled by Zionists”? The Corbynista Ultras haven’t been shy about attacking the EHRC for that reason but they aren’t going to write it in the manifesto.

70 Labour staff whistleblowers, 28,000 words, reams of testimonies and evidence, some very disturbing conclusions and what we get is someone nitpicking over my sentence about Corbynistas now hating and declaring war on the Equality and Human Rights Commission and it all of a sudden becoming a campaign issue and part of the manifesto.

How is not independent now? The insinuation Labour are making here is that the EHRC investigation is the result of undue pressure or influence.

EDIT: Reading the excerpts on Adam Wagner’s twitter feed is chilling. Remember that every word of this was written by committed Labour party supporters.

I’m no expert, but e.g. I believe the EHRC has to get spending for campaigns signed off by the current government, which people working with and in the EHRC perceived affected their operational independence.

Interesting (although hardly an unbiased source). If Labour weren’t CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION then yes, I’d interpret this manifesto promise as beign about this kind of issue.

Simple question for you: Do you believe the EHRC investigation is the result of undue pressure or influence?

No. Anti-semitism is obviously a real issue in the party, and as a Labour party member I want everything possible to be done to eradicate it from the party (and of course wider society). The more scrutiny from outside the party, the better.

(edit: which is honestly why I was asking for sources earlier - if Labour were proposing to abolish the EHRC that’s something I need to know about.)

So, can you see how talking about making the EHRC “fully independent” at a point where the party is being investigated by the EHRC is incendiary?

But I honestly don’t think it’s a response to the EHRC investigation (launched in May 2019). It was also - word for word - a promise in Labour’s 2017 manifesto:

Devastating cuts to the Equality and Human Rights Commission by the Conservatives reveal their real attitude, beyond the rhetoric, to issues of equality and discrimination. These cuts have been made amid the rise in hate crime recorded by the police in the last year. A Labour government will enhance the powers and functions of this commission, making it truly independent, to ensure it can support ordinary working people to effectively challenge any discrimination they may face.

Fair enough, but still if you tap into Labour socmedia the message is clear what the goal is now.

Incidentally I do wonder about the dynamics that means people are generally more polite and pleasant talking about this issue here, talking to reasonably well anonymized complete strangers, than on facebook. It’s not like QT3 has heavy handed moderation, and I’d say the general political balance is pretty similar to my social circle.

It’s not like this thread has been entirely free from frustration and personal attacks though.

Maybe it’s the international audience? It’s hard to be an evangelist for a political cause amongst non-voters.

Activists show Corbynistas evidence of Boris Johnson saying anti-Semitic things. Get their reactions.

Then reveal it was Corbyn who said them.

What’s even happening now with you guys?
I periodically pop in here, and I always realize that I have no idea what’s going on.

Are you guys leaving the EU yet? Are you having another vote about it?

Sure, but it’s a different order of magnitude really. I think the facebook behaviour is more about maintaing orthodoxy within the in-group. Heretics must not only be corrected but also punished and seen to be punished, so that others do not dare dissent. Having real names and real social links involved makes this urge stronger, not weaker.

We’re having a vote about having another vote on it, and also incidentally over who runs the country for the next 5 years. The leading candidates are a sociopathic serial liar and rabble rouser who has made common cause with racists for political power, and someone who has dedicated his entire political career to bringing about the end of western democracy as we know it and has no scruples about whom he allies himself with in this crusade.

Have you impeached Trump yet? At least you guys have Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Pete.

Depends who wins the election.

Tories - no deal /poor deal + leave asap

Labour - will negotiate own deal and offer referendum on it

LibDems - cancel Brexit

Drawing up the articles of impeachment as we speak.

But the lib dems can’t win, right? Both the major parties are still in favor of brexit? That seems weird.

Lib Dems winning would take the biggest swing in known history - like the Dolphins winning the superbowl this season.

Tories love Brexit it calls to their hearts stuck in the bollocks of ‘Britain stood alone’ narrative. They all fought WWII and they got through the blitz.

Labour rank and file membership are strongly pro-remain. Corbyn, the leader, and his acolytes (#notacult) hanker for the 1970s and happen to believe that the EU is capitalist conspiracy which will stop them creating their own socialist nirvana. Unfortunately, none of them can really point to a policy which they are stopped from doing by EU law.

I like this analysis. Perhaps at Qt3 there is the social element - we might talk about games in another thread - without the names and social group maintenance. Interesting.
