We’re free.

Plus we can pick on minorities now.

Yay.

No longer must I content myself with denigrating gingers, I can now shit on Jews, blacks, non English whites, other English whites who aren’t from within 5miles of me (like those fuckers from. Newcastle) Welsh, Scots etc.

Have I missed anyone?

Yay, freedom.

Is this that “sovereignty” thing I kept hearing them bandy about?

Last nights Trump rally.

I have covered many stories that marked me over the past 40 years, in war zones and outside them, but none that has affected me as personally as Britain’s exit from the European Union. Brexit Day, now upon us, feels like the end of hope, a moral collapse, a self-amputation that will make the country where I grew up poorer in every sense.

Poorer materially, of course, but above all poorer in its shriveled soul, divorced from its neighborhood, internally fractured, smaller, meaner, more insular, more alone, no longer a protagonist in the great miracle of the postwar years — Europe’s journey toward borderless peace and union. Britain, in a fit of deluded jingoism, has opted for littleness.

Get ready to be on the other side of that.

That is a really weird usage of schadenfreude; I’m pretty sure that word doesn’t mean what you seem to think it means, given that the vast majority of the people you’re arguing with here (with the exception of pwk) have no stake in Brexit and are consequently extremely unlikely to be negatively affected by it. The misfortune is not ours.

I’m not usually pedantic about words, but I’d pick mine better, if I were you. Because the main misfortune that is about to happen, will fall on immigrants and foreigners in the UK and if you seriously feel schadenfreude over the very real fears pwk has for himself and his family, well - then you deserve to be considered of a kind with the sieg-heiling people shown above.

Yes, you’re right - it was a poor choice of words.
EDIT: I wish misfortune on no-one.

Well, enjoy your moment of triumph. :)

I expect we’ll still be having heated discussions here in a years time, with the looming specter of Hard Brexit still undecided. Although I certainly hope not - I think all sides would much prefer it if negotiations go quickly and smoothly. I just don’t have much belief in that happening.

The schadenfreude is gonna be very real when folks who wanted Brexit start suffering though.

My wifes a Geordie, living 20 mins from the Nissan factory. Her town is surrounded by an industrial estate full of supplier firms. Her parents actual constiuency voted Remain and to keep the factory open and their neighbours and friends in work, but those around it voted to close the factory down, because at the end of the day, they hated foreigners more than they loved employment, paying mortgages and bills and putting food on the table.

No no no.

They loved sovereignty more than the temporary inconvenience of something something.

I mean, don’t you get this yet? *

*rhetorical question.

Brexit in one sentence?

Their lives are already so miserable I’m not sure they’ll be able to tell the difference.

I think the most eye-opening thing for me is the discovery that, outside of major cities like London, the more rural English are every bit as parochial and provincial as are their counterparts in rural Europe and America. I tended to think of the UK as largely urban, with some level of sophistication in their social views, and boy was I wrong. Mea culpa.

Reminds me of how I felt after election night in 2016, “Wow, I knew we had assholes here, but I had no idea we had THIS many assholes here.”

Yes, very much this. Even worse, I had no idea the assholes were so stupid as to fall for Trump’s con.

Yeah that too.

Same here, except less forgivable for me, having lived here all my life. I obviously don’t mix widely enough!

Just talked to a friend yesterday whose dad, at 70+ years old, only watches FOX, and when challenged about it, states categorically that every other news source is fake.

It’s like there’s a hand up his ass making him say shit like that. Almost like he can’t help himself.

Elderly folks who are sucked into right wing media are very much cultists, in a literal sense of the word.

There will need to be serious de-programming to get them back to reality at this point, and there’s just no way that’s going to ever happen. They’re lost.
