Are the white rape gangs cool?

The sign posters are IN the white gangs.

Of course they are. When it’s a white rapist the victim was dressed like a slut and was asking for it, and he was always such a good boy and a little angel as a child.

In the States we call them Supreme Court Justices.

Ouch. Rapist in the Supreme Court and a pussy grabber (and likely much worse) for a President. Ladies and gentlemen, your Republican party!

Leopard party news update.

And the most stupid leopard party voter yet.

edit: and more detail around Trump Johnson’s approach to the media.

Yeah, the media is howling now.

But having helped destroy Labor over many years, they’ve literally created this situation themselves. Why should BJ care whether they are his friends? It’ll take a quite unprecedented turnaround by Labor to get back into power by the next election and - if Boris is cynical enough (and it looks like Labour is getting closer), he can always just give Scotland it’s independence (removing almost 50 Labour-friendly votes in parliament).

I disagree with draxen about when Scotland gets its independence vote. I am pretty sure he is right when he expects that Boris will remain in power for at least two terms. If he is cynical and smart enough, he might even eke out a third term - assuming Brexit is not a complete disaster (and it doesn’t have to be, if the Tories are smart about it).

Unelected family members involved in govt and foreign affairs? The Trumps Johnsons are at it again

and name-calling and insults is right out of Trump’s playbook too.

Does Ireland count as the UK?

I’m kidding, but we don’t have an Ireland thread. They just held an election. What blows my mind is all the different political parties they have. It’s wild, and I’m more than a little jealous. The OP in this thread explains it all.

And also SF appears to have the lead, which I understand is a really big deal.

Given that the EU and the UK are going into a Trade Deal negotiation, I would say if the SF manages to be part of the government, it’s going to be a big deal and relevant to this thread :)

That’s what PR gets you.

I get the distinct impression the US is doing democracy wrong.

Another advantage to the Irish voting system (PR as you say) is that it appears to be resistant to far right nationalist (read nativist populists) parties:

We had 24 parties on the ballot in the 2017 Dutch election. Of course, this does lead to parties like this.

Still, I’d take proportional representation over a plurality system any day. FPTP is just hot garbage.

I’ll be the contradictory voice. Why am I always the contradictory voice? :)

I’m not convinced as to the benefits of PR. It blunts the democratic process. Winning parties are prevented from making bold policy changes because they are forced to compromise.

This is a poor comparison but I’m writing this post in a hurry…
I liken it to designing something by committee. You generally end up with a poorer product because there isn’t a single focused vision. Although with PR, I guess that’s the whole point.

Possibly because the hardline nationalists are on the left.

Depends on what your goal is I guess.
Seems to me coalitions blunt polarization and extremism while taking into account the interests of the minority. Local needs are also better represented - unlike the American system where rural areas and a minority of the electorate have a disproportional impact on national representation. This would increase stability over the long term vs the wild swings in national priorities we’re now seeing in the US.

Personally I’d rather live in a world where everything I value isn’t systemically destroyed because ‘my side’ lost an election.

Hitler’s decision to burn all the Jews was also a bold policy change compared to the policies coming before. Your assertion that a singular vision is inherently ‘better’ than a compromise is disingenuous at best, authoritarian propaganda at worst.

You end up with poor policies and decisions if you have poor leaders. The method has little to do with it.

The only cheerleader in the thread for a hard right, white supremacist, ethno-nationalist party lead by a liar and racist favours a system that keeps his dogshit racist party into power?

quelle fucking surprise.

Woa… hold the phone. How did we get from First-Past-The-Post to Hitler in a single forum post?

To clarify I’m talking about FPTP vs. Proportional Representation. We’ve used FPTP in the UK since… googles 1884. It seems to be working out for us pretty well so far.

I don’t have time today to debate properly but…
Wikipedia tells me I’m not alone in my opinion:

Tony Blair, defending FPTP, argued that other systems give small parties the balance of power, and influence disproportionate to their votes.[7] Allowing people into the UK Parliament who did not finish first in their constituency was described by David Cameron as creating a “Parliament full of second-choices who no one really wanted but didn’t really object to either.”[8] Winston Churchill criticised the electoral outcomes of the alternative vote as “determined by the most worthless votes given for the most worthless candidates.”[9]
