In the end it´s the decline of trade unions in the UK and also in the USA in the last 40 years.
The 19th century shows us that many employers and also rich people in general just don´t give a damn about poorer people and they will exploit them wherever they can. So after the slow but steady decline of unions we´re currently back at the stage where the top 1% just fucks over all people below them.

In the US they are even further down this road. As a member of the oligarchy you don´t need to fear protesting masses if they won´t protest because they fear for their jobs. And with Fox News, they even have a propaganda instrument, Joseph Goebbels could only dream about…
In the UK it started with Thatcher and it won´t end with the Trade Union Act of 2016. The big obstacle was the EU with their pesky socialdemocratic labour laws and worker rights. So they had to get out first.
Now, the top 1% can slowly but steadily go on with the disenfranchisement. For them, it´s not a sprint but a marathon. So of course they don´t give a damn about deaths among the plebs, for many of them their workers are just a ressource and currently you have to sacrifice some ressources to protect the bottom line…

While not quite in the same vein I listened to an interview on NPR 2-3 days back with someone from WHO(?) who was part of the group trying to define how to prioritize care if there are limited resources.
The key points I recall
- General guidance is to prioritize expected additional years of life post treatment w/quality of life as a secondary factor.
- Doesn’t 100% align with strict age-based decision, although in aggregate younger people will take prio
- Unclear on whether or not caregivers / medical staff should jump the queue in these situations. While the idea of prioing such people to increase care capacity makes sense, people are likely to require extended periods to properly recover, meaning that this will have little short term impact.
- It’s important to make sure that front-line medical staff is not the ones making the decision on prioritization - this will be very straining on them and will not be able to make those decisions based on guidance correctly. This should be a separate group removed from the frontlines.
- Oh and last point, not all countries agree on these guidelines - will be hard to have a consistent strategy across the globe.
This sounds like Quality Adjusted Life Years, which is a standard triage/funding metric.
