I’m not convinced that they will do so immediately. They think he has the common touch (and frankly so does the electorate), is Teflon coated and will be able to get away with it. They may think they have found an alternative leader in Rishi (though I have serious doubts there) but I think they will need to take a hell of a beating in the ballot box/polls before they drop him.
They still have 3 years before the next general election. They can keep him for another couple of years and introduce a new leader a year before if they need to.
Ah…there’s the rub. You have to hope so but I’m not sure the majority of the UK are of the same mind.
I’m fairly confident the process will be for the 1922 committee to dump Johnson in about a year, hoping to wash all the blame of the Brexit financial catastrophe and the Covid mismanagement away along with him, set up Rishi as the new great hope and give him 18 months to benefit from some economic bounce back as some of the issues surrounding exports and imports gradually reach a new normal and claim some kind of miraculous economic recovery of around 2% growth as the dawn of a new era in global trading

You could be right but I’m really not convinced by Rishi. He’s in the same mould as George Osborne as a chancellor and will push for new austerity shortly. I think he’s liked while he’s handing out cash hand over fist. I’m not so sure when he closes this purse.
Oh I’m sure all of that is very true, he’ll need to promise some level of austerity to keep the party faithful happy. I suspect that they will want to capitalise on all of that spending during the covid crisis though before he rips the mask off with a “haha! You thought I was a socialist at heart!”
Until it finally realizes what an utter PITA it is to do that all the time and decides to become part of the EU again in 20 years or something (but, one hopes, is never stupid enough to go with the Euro and abandon the fiscal flexibility of a sovereign fiat currency).

At a certain point you have to let the state fail to illustrate those who failed it. UK is a couple of steps ahead of us at this point, but I’m not optimistic.

“Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever. ”
I don’t think we’d stand a chance of going back in without committing to the Euro. I think that will be a condition of entry. We had the best deal for us and threw it away.

Or,
But the pessimist in me agrees that nothing matters any more, and unfortunately sorting favours for mates, a callous disregard for public health and presiding over one of the worst COVID death rates in the world - and never mind the comparatively trivial personal financial corruption and rule-breaking - will all count for nought with the voting public.
I mean, he was entertaining that one time hosting Have I Got News For You, so.
Yeah just like with Trump, the world knows BoJo is a piece of shit. It’s just there’s a lot of pieces of shit who aspire to be that piece of shit.
Begun the great herring war has
No herring around Jersey? :P
Also, if there were some sort of conflict, it would be Nato members against themselves, so I don’t see tat the others would get involved…
but trade and diplomatic penalties…yeah us against the EU, not a great idea!
As you can see I don’t know my fish. And it is of course symbolic grandstanding from both parties about an issue more emotional than substantial. Still, Boris probably cannot believe his luck that the French actually threatened to cut off power a few days before an election.
Herrings are delicious. That’s all you need to know.
Also, the French are coming off as the aggressors here, on both the BBC and the Guardian, which typically lean left of the Conservatives, so god knows what the Tory rags are making of this (I don’t read them, I value my brain too much.)
This is just your run of a mill trade federation blockade.
No worries. Nothing a couple of third-party arbiters couldn’t fix.
Considering that the UK lost multiple fishing ‘wars’ to Iceland in the second half of the 20 century, I don’t fancy their chances against a nation with a proper naval fleet.
You want to know who had a bad time trying to sink a fishing fleet?
Wasn’t this mostly due to the Icelandic threat of quitting NATO, and not so much the Icelandic naval fleet?
Do not downplay the valiant action of the two little boats that made up the iceland “navy”. They were tiny. I have seen river yaughts that are larger. And they faced down the descendants of Nelson. It’s a great story.
Sure it may have been but a symbolic action in the greater scheme of things, but for the Icelanders it’s their one moment of glorious emancipation.
