Broken Sword

I don’t see anyone but me caring, but GameTrailers has some ComiCon footage of the new Broken Sword.

I’m glad they’ve gone back to 2D, but yikes, the art direction actually looks worse than Broken Sword 1.

Edit: I AM AN IGNORANT FOOL! A FOOL I SAY!

I thought the art direction in Broken Sword 1 was excellent, so I’m not quite sure how to take that… daren’t watch the trailer as I haven’t played the fourth game yet.

I only played the demo of one of the 3d ones - 3 maybe? - and it seemed they didn’t really know how to populate a 3d space and make it interesting. This is maybe more suited to what they can pull off.

It’s safe to watch the trailer- this is actually actually a director’s cut of the very first game- same backgrounds (and maybe sprite animation but I’m not sure) with some new artwork from Watchmen artist David Gibbons inserted.

Really? Awesome. I had no clue.

I do know I don’t care for the new art, though.

They’re going back to Shadow of the Templars? Cool! Maybe now I can finish it…

That said, is that Comic Sans they’re using for the subtitles? Ewwww.

It looks as if the events in the trailer happen before the start of the first game (when the cafe goes BOOM). Although I wonder why she’s reminded of an old boyfriend in that scene, when she hasn’t even met George yet.

This game may be a system seller for me, if it has enough new content. I definitely like their return to the eternal question, if mimes are annoying, evil, or both.

And they should only use Comic Sans when the mime speaks.

Long-time reader, first-time poster. Hello!

I liked the first two Broken Sword games an awful lot - I thought George and Nico were pretty likeable characters, the story was interesting and the puzzles were decent. The 3D one I played was a lot more forgettable, and even had a crate-pulling puzzle, of all things. A director’s cut of the original is a good thing, since I’ve been meaning to revisit it and see if it still holds up.

On the subject of the art style, my girlfriend’s uncle is a artist and graphic designer in Sheffield (near where Revolution are based in York) and he was telling me that he actually met with Dave Gibbons and Revolution Software when they were working on the first game, to submit some of the hand-drawn backgrounds - none of which actually made it in in the end, but still a surprisingly interesting twist to a chat over dinner.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director’s Cut (DS) got 4.5 out of 5 stars at adventuregamers.com today.

The game is really well done, at least so far. There is a hint system in place that you can go to if you get stuck, so the frustration that can arise for some in an adventure game is taken completely away. You’re left to enjoy playing the game and to enjoy the story. I got to a block moving puzzle fairly early on and after dinking with it for 10 minutes or so I’d had it. I hate those kind of puzzles. And you know what? After it made sure I’d spent enough time trying to do it myself, and after I asked explicitly for a hint, the game told me a trick to bypass the puzzle. Very well done.

Oh, hey, look, other people bumped this and I was just about to.

I picked this up along with my DSi and I have this to say to fellow fans of classic adventure games.

If you do not buy Broken Sword, I will find you and punch you in the kidneys.

We need to send a message and that message needs to be ‘Dear LucasArts, RELEASE SHIT FOR THE DS YOU BASTARDS! And we don’t mean another goddam Star Wars game!’

Seriously, if I don’t see Fate of Atlantis on my DS in the next year, I know who to blame!

With Scummvm, you can have it today.

And Fate of Atlantis is a bonus with the new Wii Indy game.

I’ve got a DSi, so not really.

And really, with ScummVM I could have just played the original Broken Sword, but this is an opportunity for people like LucasArts, Funcom and Actiblizzion (Sierra) to look at how healthy adventure gaming is on something like the DS and invest a little money into remakes that do the original justice.

Also, say I’ve long since lost my Full Throttle disc. How do I play Full Throttle using SCUMMVM? I hope you wouldn’t suggest that I go to one of those downloading sites and contribute to piracy! D:

…really? Dang.

Though I’m not actually interested in playing lo-fi adventure games on my TV. Give me Grim Fandango in the palm of my hand!

Hasn’t Full Throttle been out of manufacture for a decade?

If you wanted to be legal, it’d surprise me if you couldn’t grab a copy off ebay for a fiver.

Why doesn’t scummvm work on the DSi?

You make an excellent argument for a rerelease on the DS!

Why doesn’t scummvm work on the DSi?

That’s what people in the ‘do you own a DS flashcard’ thread say.

Hmmm, Moore says:

Don’t forget if you have a dsi 90% of these do not work.

You can read that as “10% do work”, you just have to make sure you buy the correct one.

Buy somethnig with i in the name - and keep in mind for homebrew, you’ll want to buy a new one whenever they figure out the dsi exclusive stuff, as the current carts work for ds mode which cuts it off form the faster cpu speeds and extra ram - which will be sweet for homebrew once someone figures it out (sadly I dont think any device will get made until there are dsi exclusive games for pirating.)

I read this as “homebrew works, but with no added features over a regular DS”.

Hmmm, I think I want a DSI! I don’t do commutes with public transport nor do I travel a lot, but I think it would be bliss for when I’m in bed and the wife is asleep. I use scummvm on my PDA, but apart from that there’s nothing else I really like to play on it.

I’ve been thinking of picking up Ultima Underworld for mine. It’s only $6 or so through the Amazon Marketplace.

Uh, no, that’s not really my cuppa. But thanks for the link; there’s some interesting stuff on that site.
