God bless Hulu, but daaaaaamn, I’m rewatching Buck Rodgers for the first time since I was like 8 years old and, well, let’s just say it’s bad on a level that’s absolutely horrible. I mean, there’s bad, there’s campy bad, and then there’s Bubonic Plague Bad.
And yet there are at least two tiers of worse SF TV than that.
There’s umm, which one is it? Space Patrol? Tom Corbett? Not sure which is which, but the producer was always the bad guy because of budget. 50s era stuff, mostly done live I think because film was way too expensive.
There was this one episode where they landed on the dinosaur planet (dinosaurs = plastic toys on a tabletop shot in extreme close-up). There was supposed to be an earthquake, and the guy shaking the table knocked it over. Talk about suspension of disbelief…
The two-parter featuring Buster Crabbe is still one of my favorite bits of anything ever on TV, just because they gave the man his props. It actually makes me cry a little when I see it, it was one of his last acting jobs and he died a few years later.
In a more constructive note, given that classic Battlestar Galactica and Incredible Hulk are available on Hulu, all they really need to do now is add Bionic Woman and I will be able to recreate every Saturday afternoon of my youth.
