Calling All Cars

I picked this up the other day on the PS Network, and I gotta say, it’s pretty brilliant. It’s a simple game in concept and execution…you’re cop cars, you run into the crook to knock him up in the air and then you catch him and bring him back to the jailhouse. There’s an easy 1-point entrance, a harder 2-point entrance that requires a jump or something, and a harder 3-point entrance that requires some fancy drivin’ to get in. Meanwhile, everyone else tries to take the crook from ya.

I’m sure you guys have read the previews and such. I don’t have a lot to add, expect that they just nailed the “feel” stuff in this game. The cars handle just right. Totally cartoony, you never feel like you’re out of control. It’s like pushing around little matchbox cars on the floor. It was smart to keep the number of maps to a very small four (very polished, stylish, pretty maps) and the weapons down to three. More than that just turns off new players, increases the learning curve, and makes “strategy” something only the hardcore players can afford. They kept it super simple and tight, and as such you find yourself strategizing within five minutes. Someone else has the crook - do I chase him down to ram into him, or do I have time to swing over and pick up a weapon first? Do I hang out by the jail on defense and try to stop all comers, dumping the crook in there myself? Maybe I always go for the “big score” of the 3-point shot or the police chopper…or I “slow and steady” it by taking easy, reliable 1-point runs.

The GF and I had a ton of fun playing it split-screen. She got so into it she was pressing the joypad WAY too hard and gave herself Nintendo Thumb in like 15 minutes. :(

Anyway, it’s my opinion, owning Motorsport and VF5 and Resistance, that this may well be the best thing on the PS3 right now. I wouldn’t buy a PS3 for it, but man…for $10 you can’t beat it.

Anyone else try it out yet?

Is it the type of game where if you push right, you actually turn “up” like that old 4x4 arcade game? I can never get the hang of those.

No, if you push right, your car turns and drives to the right side of the level/screen.

It’s on my to-do list but my schedule this past week has led to little or no gaming. I’ll be picking it up this week. Do we have enough folks to actually play a game? Does anyone know if it supports voice chat?

It does support voice chat.

I’m in love with this game. It so easy to pick up and have a great time. I’m always cursing and laughing at the same time every time I play. Easily the best party game on any system at the moment IMO. You can play solo online, up to four people offline and even two people can play online on the same PS3.

Where is the PS3 friends list thread on QT3? The search function isn’t working for me.
