Canadian politics

This stuff is so milquetoast compared to the treasonous shit Cheeto Mussolini commits daily.

But Trump’s behavior never changed. That’s the key.
Trump’s a bigot and a sexist pig, not because of what he did years ago, but because of what he continues to do to this day. There’s no indication that he ever changed.

Let’s take another extreme example, Senator Robert Byrd.

Byrd was, at one time, a hard core racist. He was a member of the KKK. He filibustered against the Civil Rights Act.

But later in his life, he renounced all of those things, and spoke out against racism. His political stances, in terms of his voting record at that point, seemed to suggest that his reformation was real, and not merely him paying political lip service. Certainly, if he wanted to keep being racist, he could have swapped parties like Strom Thurmmond.

Was he a racist, even after changing? I feel like we have to be willing to accept that people can change.

I do too and I believe in forgiveness. Note that I believe Biden is catching flack for working previously with other senators who were racist. Not even that Biden himself is racist, but rather that he worked across the isle with others who were.

There is certainly a different mindset for these things today than there ever has been, which I think is the issue for Trudeau. This isn’t 2001. Perhaps not everyone is willing to forgive and let it go. My guess is that like everything else these days, it will polarize the two groups, those who support him and those who do not. I don’t think this will sway people to jump sides.

I’m sort of shocked that this actually happened. Shocked because Trudeau has always seemed to stand up against racism. Not so shocked because this guy’s idea of a good joke was to throw himself down a flight of stairs. While I’m disappointed in him, I do believe he has changed and it won’t affect my vote. I mean, if you’re really upset about racism, are you going to vote for someone else and let the actual party of racists into power?

Seriously?!

If i compare other black face cases with this one, will Trudeau be judged and treated the same?

It seems that the mitigator for this case was that it was 50 years ago and the apologies etc. Not so recent we were all posting on LumTheMad about MMOGs at the time. Um, three times.

So Trump commented on Trudeau’s “scandal.” Wish JT would put him in his place by commenting that at least he didn’t pay off a porn actress after cheating on his wife.

I cast my advance ballot.

Election day! A good day to be Canadian.

Is Canada the third longest-lasting government on earth, following the United States and Britain?

Third-oldest democracy, probably.

I think the longest-lasting government is still San Morino, dated from 1463.

My favourite thing is that Maxime Bernier (PPC) is running against Maxime Bernier (Rhino)

You’re welcome, Canada.

And they both lost!

I’ve wondered out loud why 3rd (and 4th and 5th) parties seem to be viable in Canada despite the FPTP system. You’d think what would naturally happen is that the Conservatives would move left enough to pick up 40% of the vote and have majority governments until the left-wing was united.

Tonight made me think that this is actually hard to pull off, because Canada is more left-leaning than the US, but a significant chunk of the right wing is as far right as the US right wing. So the sort of span of opinion they’d have to cover without fracturing the right is just difficult to pull off.

Well according to Scheer, Trudeau should get to form government since he has the most seats.

Fucking carpetbagger Tim Uppal won. He’s the one that hasn’t lived in the city for 10 years and won’t move back.

My riding, which has been a Liberal bastion since it was represented by Pierre Trudeau, went solidly Liberal again. Why is this surprising? Because the last few elections have been getting closer and closer to the Conservatives winning, largely driven by their staunch support of Israel. My riding is very, very heavily Jewish so that’s been a big factor. But Scheer was so clearly an unacceptable candidate that it reverted back to Liberal dominance. Amazing.

My riding remained conservative but the NDP and Green got many more votes than the 2015 election. Conservative 32K (same as 2015), Liberal $20K (down 2K), and Green and NDP around 6K each (up from around 2K each).

Alberta’s anti-climate change pro-oil position is if anything is worse off, as Trudeau will need to keep the NDP satisfied in order to govern.

I’ve helped with elections for the last 20 years if anyone has questions.

We had a lot of vocal anti-Trudeau voters, but my polls were mostly liberals when we counted.

Our kiddos might not be taught politics anymore. I had a few people asking why they couldn’t vote for Jagmeet Singh, or who the “Independent” party was and why they had several candidates.

Meanwhile, in right-wing redneck Alberta, screw over the disabled!
