Although this this is true, we the consumers of culture/art have to be cognizant of the contradictions. Dickens wrote great novels but was also a jerk to his wife. Thomas Jefferson wrote great political documents but also owned slaves. At the same time! Neither negates the other but at the same time neither should be disregarded. Human history is full of contradictions. Purity is a lie. Reality is complicated. I am very drunk.

Sharpe is very drunk and I am very drunk. Is this a contradiction? History is full of more than one drunk person.

You’re far better at typing accuracy than I am when very drunk.

It’s 2022 folks. Let’s hope it’s better than 2021. I resolve to contribute by always trying to give my interlocutors online the benefit of the doubt.

Happy New Year, all! 2021 has totally been CANCELED!

But this problem isn’t new, and what are your solutions Scott? :)

Happy New Years!

But excommunication is still okay.

Almost posted this in the WTF thread.

He believes only the church should be able to cancel you.

So, jokes aside, after reading the speech itself and not relying on the beltway teen beat article, the point I think he’s trying to make isn’t as cringey as it is at first glance. It’s an address to diplomats. I think he’s saying something along the lines of don’t let strict adherence to more liberal western ideals of diversity and acceptance of lifestyles that are frowned upon in less tolerant nations hinder diplomatic efforts in those places. That’s the most generous and not nonsensical reading I can get from it.

I’m pretty sure he’s not talking about social media bullying or anything on twitter. It’s overall a pretty good address despite the odd invokation of our favorite term.

Also during some commentary on the migrant crisis the 12 year old trapped inside me couldn’t help but giggle.

A very moving part of that Journey was my visit to the island of Lesbos

I have a boardgame about ancient greece where that’s a location on the map, and I swear no one has ever made a move involving it without some form of the joke.

What’s with the Pope recently? He was cool. Spoke out against the rich and all that. Finally acting Christian.

edit: ok I read Thrag’s summary.

Seems to be the discussion du jour:

SImilar to the Aziz Ansari incident, guy who is a standard model jackass (with a twist into creeperhood with the dick pics) is being hunted down by the entire internet, apparently, as well as being used as a marketing tool? It’s interesting that this one seems to be a bridge too far for a number of people based on some mentions and articles.

Thanks to that, I learned what “lovebombing” and “keepler” are.

I wish I didn’t.

That’s a really well-reasoned piece, thanks for linking it. Everything she wrote rings true and correct to me.

But it’s giving me e.e. cummings flashbacks (also corporate emails from Jerry Yang when he was Yahoo CEO; he was terminally allergic to capital letters).

I’m so glad I’m in middle-age and don’t have to deal with the stupid shit (and made up words) that kids deal with nowadays.

Is avoidance of any capital letters a thing now? Or is that just some odd stylistic choice of this one individual? I tried reading it, but my brain just noped out due to the lack of capitals. It triggers the same reflex as when literally is used figuratively. I feel old.

same. My brain registers it as big blocks of letters.

I read the whole things and did not even notice the lack of capital letters until you all pointed it out. I do remember having an initial impression that it was in a strange font.

I’ve seen a couple of people in those circles do it, but it’s not commonplace.

Just remember, the ancient Romans wrote everything in ALL CAPS. NO WONDER THEY WERE SO AGGRESSIVE.
