Cancelling Employer Sponsored Insurance (Dental)

So, recently I found out that my employer-sponsored dental insurance doesn’t cover any of the nearby decent dentists. I was surprised by this because I had Delta Dental PPO, which most dental offices accept, but the company one is DeltaCare, which is an HMO, and most of them don’t accept.

So, the question is, can I cancel my deltacare insurance and enroll privately with a different insurance provider?

I doubt you can just drop your insurance mid-year. Most employer-based insurances have sign-up periods (typically November?) and that is the only time you can change. You should check with your HR office, I would assume.

You should be able to sign up for a private plan at any time though. You’d just have overlapping plans for the rest of the year.

Yeah, that might not be doable.

I’ll figure out something.

Another thing to keep in mind: a lot of (or at least some of the most affordable) private dental insurance requires you to have held the policy for a period of time (typically 6 months to at least a year) before you can use it for anything too major, besides regular checkups and and minor repairs like fillings, etc.

Everything is great, nothing to see here
