I bought a cheap supertank printer awhile ago just so I never have to care about these stupid things again.
My Samsung refrig also does this with the water filter. The filter light doesnt go off if you use something other than their own. I ignore the light and go by taste. We really only use the water for ice cubes anyway.
Samsung filters are so expensive i’d probably add a whole-house filter before the water line even enters the fridge. One of those filters lasts me 6 months+ in my kitchen sink, and I even wash my dishes with it.
GE filters are $6 each at home depot.
