Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead

These are the ones I have in my basement. There may be other types but at 400 volume this one is way too big for me to carry.

http://cdda.chezzo.com/wooden_barrel

Wait, I didn’t think of trying to wield it to get around the volume. I’ll try that.

Yeah wielding is how you move all of the big stuff. The other way is the advanced inventory screen (the ‘/’ key if you haven’t discovered it yet… game changer!). Unfortunately I don’t think you can move stuff up and down stairs using the advanced inventory method, but I could be wrong since I haven’t tried it.

I don’t envy anyone trying to learn this game from scratch. I’ve been playing since it was just ‘Cataclysm’ and there was one developer(so hipster). It’s been a lot easier to learn new features incrementally, but I still learn about new things almost every time I play. Easily my favorite game of all time… I’m glad you discovered it too.

Yeah, it’s a lot to learn but I love games with depth like this and I love diving in and exploring all the fun stuff you can do. So far it’s bad at all. With maybe 2 exceptions.

The UI is probably the hardest thing about this game. It kind of reminds me of dwarf fortress in some ways.

The other thing is the power and vehicle systems. That’s a bit of a head scratcher in that it’s almost a separate game within the game. It looks like you can’t have electrical power without building a vehicle frame to put the components on. If you want power inside, you have to build a frame inside. At least, that how it appears to me. I’m still trying to wrap my head around exactly how to power my equipment in a non-fiddly way.

There is no non-fiddly way to get a powered base setup. Setting up a power grid in your base is exactly like building a vehicle, just not in a vehicle shape. you gather a bunch of frames and start a new vehicle construction, then add on more frames in the shape/arrangement you want. Think of the frames like electrical and plumbing conduits instead of vehicle parts. Once you have the frames down you can start adding components like batteries, lights, stereo, RV Kitchen, Vehicle welding/forge rigs, motors or Solar panels to charge the batteries, etc. To control the electronics you need a vehicle control system installed (just like in a car). New players tend to want to create static home bases while more experienced players tend to setup mobile apocalypse-death-mobiles.

Here is my Tutorial characters Apocalypse-Mobile:

Wow, minireactors with plutonium cells. That’s pretty sweet. I’m a long way from finding or making equipment like that. I think all that is covered around episodes 160-165 in your play-though and I’m nowhere near getting there quite yet. :)

I like how your heavy frame is only 5 units wide. I’ve seen some tanks and other vehicles wider than that and it seems to me they’d be a nightmare to actually drive without hitting stuff constantly.

Yeah, that’s my mobile base. It’s not intended for fighting/ramming/maneuvering/etc. I use a tricked out Humvee for initial scouting/clearing of an area then pull my folding bike out of the trunk, bike back to my Mobile base and drive it forward to the newly cleared area. This one started as an RV and i got kind of carried away.

Is your folding bike powered, or do you use pedal power for that? Would you mind showing a screenshot of it’s layout? I might actually be able to cobble something like that together now myself.

Uhh…i think it’s been used twice…the last time about 6 months ago. I don’t often move my mobile base.

Okay, thanks. It is pedal powered I see.

What I’m wondering is if I can take a bike frame and then attach a shopping cart basket to it and pedal it around. That way I could visit nearby towns more quickly and put the loots in my basket and pedal back home. I can’t seem to find a vehicle that actually runs so I thought I’d keep things simple and start with making a bike. Right now I’m pulling a shopping cart around on foot and it takes forever to get anywhere.

You can mount a V12 engine to your shopping cart, wield an Awl Pike and joust your way down main street at 120kph if you would like.

I have never bothered much with pedal power. It drains stamina too quickly for my preferences and you really can’t go off-road with it effectively so i usually don’t bother.

I generally stick with shopping carts and vehicles for my hoarding tendencies.

What you really want is a quad bike. I love those things.

If your curious about vehicles…start up new ‘test’ world with a generic character and use the debug menu to summon up any vehicle you want. you can test drive it, see how its put together, etc. It’s a great way to learn about vehicles and what rules they use for design/construction.

Thanks, Vorm. That’s a good idea. And I’ll investigate that quad bike.

If anyone out there is wondering what is is about this game, all you need to do is read some of the threads on Reddit. One thread is a list of questions from new players answered by the community. Here’s a sample:

My Islamic dog-man companion keeps screaming. Is there any way to muffle him, at least at night time.

Not every person is cut out for apocalypse survival. You know what you should do with him. Be sure to thank Allah for the free meat.

And another thread with badass stories caught my eye:

You know the drill, cool shit that happened, preferably rng with not hax characters, tell us about it.

So on my quest to make at least 1 of every possible character/Starting scenario I made a SWAT CQC Specialist named Carted Kellington. (Have all the class+scenario mods on) and his ass somehow found itself with some stupid plant dude inside of a bookstore in the middle of a huge ass city.

Now, of course they are surrounded by the dead in all manners and forms, but it’s dark so the pair are safe for now, and Carter also convinced the plant guy Tom that they should roll together. Great! Of course until a zombie puppet comes to the window and knocks too hard. The pair wrecks it, Tom has vines, thorns, and level 6 unarmed, and Carter ain’t a slouch himself with level 3 melee and bashing weapons skill paired with an expanding baton. Carter drags the body inside to close the doorway where it landed and takes a breath. But then there was a thump on the door, and 10 seconds later there wasn’t a door, and Tom had the bright idea to jump out the window and call the attention of THE HUGE ASS HORDE RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET.

To a building with no exit other than the front door. Carter hides in a dark corner and waited until Tom dived back through the window beat to all hell with about 70 zombies following him. At this point Carter flicks out his baton and starts smashing heads, and a wound check later on Tom shows he isn’t gonna make it. A few good hits later and Tom is dead, and 60 odd zombies are left coming for Carter and his delicious face.

Now, honestly I had resounded Carter to a YASD at this point but was determined to go out fighting. I didn’t pull out my shotgun because that would have guaranteed death. So on he goes, bashing heads, jumping between bookcases to keep 1v1 as long as possible. He gets pushed back, more zeds flood in. Further he goes until he is cornered, the bookcases around him are getting smashed, has surrounded on every side but the 3,430, and his 6.

And then rnjeesus gets real. About 20 bashed heads later his adrenaline rush pops off, even with like 90 pain at this point, this put him back at top fighting capacity. He’s got bites on every limb but his head because helmets. He’s losing blood because zombie dog bites. He bent his baton breaking it off so many skulls. AND then I notice there are only the 6 or so zombies immediately surrounding him. And with those six dead I shift+c a mighty and defiant “You yell AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” Proceed to pop 3 pain pills from a corpse, let Carter have a well deserved cigarette, and then grab a pair of scissors proceeding to cauterize not 1, not 2, but 3 of his bite wounds. He magically healed his left arm bite because he is such a badass, and is now sitting next to Tom’s bloody corpse eating a bag of Doritos.

I got really lucky last night and found my very first working CDDA vehicle parked next to a construction site in my starting town. Not only is it working it’s in perfect “like new” condition. Every single component is green. It also has some diesel in it and a battery charge so I was able to drive it home. Even better it has a built in lift so I’ll be able to use it to remove heavy storage batteries from abandoned vehicles. It is apparently an “Excavator”.

I do wish it had a gas engine rather than a I6 diesel one but I’ll take it.

After a few trips into town, my shiny new shopping cart full of loot is now a squeaking battered piece of junk. The status of the casters is grey, the basket and frame are red. They were all originally a healthy green. I basically have to drag it around with me and it makes a constant noise. Not good.

So, as a replacement, I decided to make a folding shopping cart that I could stash in the trunk of my new car, along with a jerrycan, to go exploring nearby towns with. Getting all the supplies I needed took some doing as well as raising my fabrication skill to the the level needed but at last I got it done last night.

I’m not sure what happened to the original cart. Does anyone know if overloading them is what causes them to break like that?

Now to head over to a new town to look for computer books. There’s only one bookstore and library in my starting town and I’m missing a big chunk of my education. I also need diesel fuel. There’s none at all in the town’s gas stations. Maybe I could swap my car’s diesel engine out for a gas one but I don’t think I have my mechanics skill at a high enough level to do that yet.

Most damage to carts is from either monsters or you hitting it. Shady zombies especially might be damaging it as you cannot see them on the far side of the cart at night. You can usually hear the cart taking a hit if you pay attention. I believe there is some wear and tear through normal use but i have not experimented to find out how/why (overloading, dragging across rough ground, etc).

Swapping an engine only takes Mechanics 4 (its 4 PER engine…so 8 for two engines, 12 for three etc). You will need a lifting device though.

Food and Water are tough early on for a newbie. Lots of rain, but I need to craft a makeshift funnel and plastic bottles are hard to come by. Food seems easier. Kill something and cook it in a fire. I’ve also learned that hardware stores are filled with zombies.

I’m slowly learning the interface. In some cases, I would prefer it if certain bits of information were always present on the screen. Maybe there are options for that, I’ll have to check.

There is no way to add elements to the interface unfortunately (other than things like having a watch/cell-phone showing the exact time instead of the sun/moon dial).

My suggestion for new players struggling with getting the early food/water/tools they need is to learn how to night-raid towns. With some knowledge/practice it makes early survival much much easier.

Yeah, I just made it to the next town at night, unfolded my new cart, and after fighting about 6 shady zombies my casters are yellow and the frame is red already. Damn it.

The good news is than on the way over there I found a tank vehicle that was loaded with diesel. So now I have a full gas tank and a full jerrycan in my trunk.

My new vehicle came with a lift on the front of it.

I haven’t bothered with the rain and funnels. Just get 3 empty plastic bottles (the bigger the better) and fill one of them with water from a toilet, pond, swimming pool, etc… Find a stove in a house that has a pot on it and drop a 2x4 or other wood onto the stove. Light it with a match or lighter and then open your crafting menu (* key). Tab over to the “food” section and select “clean water”. Pick the empty plastic bottle(s) to put your purified water in.

I like finding a house with a pool because it’s an endless water supply. I like using gallon jugs to hold the water (holds 15 units). Also good are 3L glass jars (holds 12 units).

Edit: As far as plastic bottles being scarce, they really aren’t. Just look in basements for gallon jugs of ammonia or bleach and pour it out. Refrigerators have a lot of fruit drinks in plastic bottles. Grocery stores are loaded with them. You can buy drinks in plastic bottles from vending machines, too.

I tried night raiding that “home depot” as my first target. Big mistake :)

Thanks, the info will be very helpful.

Yeah, stick to homes on the edge of town at first and then work your way to juicy target buildings that are also on the town edges. Big mega stores are absolutely LOADED with zombies. The smaller stores are not too bad. If you can find a library or bookstore and get to it, you can get books to increase your fighting skills quickly. Once you do that and get some better equipment/protection, you can start being more adventurous.
