Catch-all Europe isn't that great thread

He had difficulty, now he lives in Portugal, and I assume he has an easier time, not like we look down at people from France.

But integration is easier in the US, I think, there’s less of a not really American attitude.

Does that mean French people didn’t accept him or didn’t want him there? Or just that it was hard coming from a different culture? Sorry if I sound stupid.

Not like we went into much detail about the whole thing, but that he never felt like he belonged, like he was never accepted as being truly French. And he was born in France, and one of his parents is French.

Of course, it probably didn’t help that at the time the Portuguese were for lack of a better term kind of the Mexicans of France. :D I’m sure it’s better now, but in Europe generally speaking, it’s harder for foreigners to be accepted as being truly part of the country. Like with the French soccer team, where the far right say that many players are not truly French.

I think it’s to a large extent because being American is an idea, while being French, or Portuguese or Swede, or any other European nationality, it’s a matter of history.

Ok, this goes here:

Pretty damning. Only silver lining is that the countries where they polled where pre-selected. Ignores Western and Southern Europe (it’s about central and Eastern Europe, and the UK), so hope raminas on the whole numbers are lowers.

Most striking quote:

Ignorance and bigotry do go hand in hand indeed.

But how could the Jews run everything if they only constituted a trivial percentage of the population? Clearly that’s a lie.

Check and mate.

If you think excluding Western and Southern Europe inflated those numbers, then I have some Florida swampland to sell you. Or a Socialist Workers’ paradise where everything is perfect. You choose. :)

If you have Florida swampland to sell, that kinda means you bought it first. Just sayin’.

The key factor here is: price. ;)

That’s better than the U.S. which I bet is 40%.

I am genuinely shocked the UK number is that high.

I lived there for half my life including in some of the more xenophobic parts of the country I still speak with friends and relatives a lot I have never ever heard a single anti Semitic statement or phrase or joke. Ever. Other ethnic groups yes, but never about British Jews.

I am not saying the poll is wrong (although I am skeptical of it), just expressing surprise. Whoever the 20% are in the UK they sure do keep it quiet.

Now its a completely common and mainstream view that Israel is at fault for its attacks on the Palestinians right to exist but that’s a very different stream. I wonder if the poll somehow mistakenly put the two together somehow?

edit:
Ok after reading it, the alleged “anti semitism” in the UK is because 20% of British people in their poll of 1000 people over estimated how many Jewish people there are? Thats pretty weak.

I couldnt tell you what % of the population is Buddhist and I would resent being labeled a bigot just because of my ignorance.

I mean, the crosstabs are linked in the article.

And some France…

Thanks! yeah it makes it an even weaker argument when you see the numbers. Here is the “smoking gun” for the UK.

The connection of “I have no idea how many people there are of a certain religion” to “I am bigoted against that religion” seems like bullshit to me.

I make no claim around the other countries polled as I have no direct experience there but I do in the UK.

Corbyn is an old school British socialist. That the Palestinians are oppressed by Israel is an article of faith to them.

More controversially is what they (mistakenly in my view) regard as the right of self defence by the Palestinians, IE: Armed resistance (code for terrorism) against oppressors is acceptable.

I dont like the man, actually I dislike him quite a lot but if that view is anti Semitic then I think at least it should be put in a separate bucket to the holocaust deniers and such.

The Independent article is far more serious and sober reading. That I wont try and explain away. I condemn it without reservation.

That’s why I posted the first one…there is (I, as well, disagree) an argument to be made re: self-defense/Palestine/Israel.

However, the first article goes deeper on other Labour antisemitism problems. And then with all that in the background, we now see the climate that leads us to the Community Security Trust stating that there is a crisis in Britain due to recorded incidents of antisemitism. Forget polls…incidents, man, at record levels and rising.

Yup. No argument from me there.

Careful now, y’all will summon playingwithknives and he’ll nail his 99 Articles Bearing Incontrovertible Proof of Labour/Corbyn Antisemitism to the thread :)

(For what it’s worth, I really appreciate his opening my eyes to that really nasty and shocking undercurrent to certain portions of the Labour party. But suffice to say, dude is. . . passionate :) )

Hey, I wonder, what’s your opinion on Republicans? :D
