I’d trust CCP to over any other MMO company to build a compelling world for player-based intrigue and politics; though I missed the boat on it, Ultima is basically the only other MMO I’ve heard of with that feeling of a massive simulated world.
I wonder if they’ll try to artificially maintain barriers between the different supernatural races, to keep the MMO world similar to the p&p one. I can’t see them making the mistake of building a WoW clone where we see a Black Fury tank, a Celestial Chorus healer and a Nosferatu rogue farm purples from Ravnos’ lair.

I can understand that. It sounds like you were doing missions that were far too easy for you, but often you don’t get much of a choice.
My advice for everyone playing EVE is do the things you find fun. If you don’t find anything fun - don’t play.

You know, I’m not sure when they solved them, but people can’t go to where you are in a mission. Deadspace = instance. If you are on a mission, you will never see another player unless they are in your gang or corp, and even then I think only gang. I’ve never been in a player corp so I can’t say for sure.
It’s pretty rare that people can grief you directly in high sec – you have to do something stupid first. And at that point… well, hopefully you learn your lesson. The ol’ “money’s in the can” trick is pretty hilarious. But if you don’t know how the game works, and you ignore the obvious warning prompts of “Warning! this is not your container! looting it will flag you as a criminal!”, then you deserve what you get.
What I love about CCP is that they do not suffer idiots. They make simulations. If you don’t understand how the simulation works, are not interested in learning it, or don’t like that fact, then absolutely the game is not for you. But it sure as shit is for people who want simulation.
That’s right Missioners.
You are PERFECTLY SAFE.
Even in LoSec.
Pay no attention to the probes near you.
More seriously, mission locations can be probed out, and other people can then join you in that instance. Hilarity then ensues.

Oh yeah? Well, in all my years playing I’ve never had someone drop in on me.

To keep it simple:
Missions are probe-able = A person with a core probe launcher and a few probes can scan you out. Everywhere. He can enter your mission (some acceleration gates might put some ship restrictions on it though) and there he can be.
If he is in empire, he’ll be still as to follow the rules concord set (no stealing and if he shoots your concord will shoot him) but salvaging is allowed.
In low-sec or 0.0 he is open to shoot you.
You can find out if somebody is probing you if you use your directional scanner, uncheck the box to use the overview setting, set the range to max and 360degree and see if probes appear on it.
If so somebody is likely putting them around you to finally get a straight hit on your location.
This is especially important in w-space as this is the only way to find out if another pilots is trying to find you.
And sorry for turning this into a Eve, thread, I ll stop with this post.

First of all, not all missions are instanced dungeons. Some are still just simple warp points in space with no mission gates. Regardless, though, it’s a bait game. Even in an instanced mission, someone probes you out and finds you. They proceed to steal your loot cans while you’re tanking 2 NPC BS and their fleet of smaller ships. I’m not talking about salvage. No one really cares about that. This is loot can pilfering, to the extend that they start blinking red to you. This gives you every right to fire at them, even in high sec, but that’s just what they’re hoping for. They have 3-5 corp mates parked at a station nearby waiting to warp to the scouts position the minute you fire at them. Then you’re toast.
See, if CCP would take away the ability to steal from other peoples’ loot cans, it wouldn’t matter if they probed you out or not. They can’t fire directly at me in high sec without bringing the wrath of Concord upon themselves. (NPC police force.) CCP leaves this ability in the game, and it creates a situation where “carebears” (for lack of a better term) can’t be immune to the bullshittery of griefers.
Each of the three times I’ve played Eve have ended when I suddenly become the victim of this type of bullshit, when I just wanted to enjoy the game as a solo experience.
Yes, I know. “Just go play WoW or something else and leave our Eve alone”, say the griefers. Well, if someone would make a decent Space MMO with PvE servers, I would play it. (Bring back Earth & Beyond!)
Sure, and then it wouldn’t be a simulation. The game gives you the tools to deal with this situation using the simulation. If you don’t want a simulation, then you should just accept that the game is not for you, and that what you really want is a game which protects you against the Bad Men while sacrificing the simulation, and you should stick to WoW.
No, not the griefers. The people who want the freedom to enjoy a simulation. You only see this from your selfish perspective, but the rules are there so that when someone commits a crime against you, you can fuck them up. If you take that away, then not only are you immune, but it removes a big chunk of the game for warring factions. Or it removes the ability to have pirates. Or it removes the ability to have bounties.

Well, the answer isn’t “just go play WoW”, it’s “Understand that practically everything in the game has risk attached”.
No, it is “Understand you are playing a simulation, and that participation in that simulation is entirely consensual.”
The only way I can see a WoD really being interesting to me is if the different meta-races (vampire, mage, wolves, etc…) have such radically asymmetric gameplay that there’s really no way for them to all group up and do a whole lot of anything together. I envision vampires as a behind-the-scenes type of thing mainly concerned with manipulating power structures who get involved in direct conflict only rarely, and realistically only with other PC’s (most NPCs don’t have enough power to bother a hunter or low level werewolf, why on earth would they be worth a vamp’s time?) Wolves would be a lot more direct combat interaction and would only interact with social power structures in a pack formation (e.g. raids, whether NPC or PC for tribal/pack power). Mages would be more of a loner type, where actively working with other mages (but not vampires of wolves) generally meant less rewards for your time. Of course, if something really nasty comes down the pipe, you don’t have much choice.
I can envision a really great, dynamic game. But it would depend on people behaving “right” (Not well, necessarily, but not getting bent when they can’t run an all combat vampire or a werewolf who likes to sit behind the scenes and pull strings.) I don’t know if that’s likely in any MMO any more; and it’s certainly a huge risk to take with a property like WoD which would otherwise have huge potential appeal. So I expect stuff like “L7 Brujah LFG” too. :/
I hope CCP takes the leap and does away with chat channels.
That would be interesting to be sure, a’la UO where you could only communicate with people that were in your immediate vicinity? It did make the game more worldy and you had to watch the characters instead of a chat box. On the other hand, communication is really important, and we all used ICQ, (this was before voice communication was prevalent, we used Roger Wilco for voice in later years.) I dunno, sure did have some benefits, but I think I would prefer lots of communication channels. I did like in Daoc and Wow too that you were unable to communicate with enemy factions.

Wait, so instead playing to the rule of the game, you guys cheated by using program outside of the game?
What’s the point of removing chat since people going to circumvent it one way or other.
Is there an equivalent forum to NMA for White Wolf freaks? Because I think you just exploded some heads in that possibly fictional place.
So what, this is World of Darkness in the medieval ages but without carrier pidgeons or errand boys? I mean EVE is about space ships and shit, so they can’t have interstellar radios or IM clients on their wicked fast navigational computers? I bet you’re saying they can’t play porn or Peggle either, you fascist!
It would be superficially interesting if, say, your vampires or mages had cell phones and other means of instant communication, while werewolves were played as more nomadic and technophobic, but as with earlier games, it would just be circumvented with xfire or some other tool.
What I’d like is a game where espionage played a reasonable part, and you couldn’t “hear” people unless you were close to them. Of course you can have actual communications between people you know and such, but that could be set behind a layer of requiring phone numbers and stuff. iPhones for every vampire! Blackberry’s for every werewolf!
Yeah pretty much, my only objection is that its not cheating, any more than using ventrilo or teamspeak or any other instant messaging service while playing other games.
And as for your statement of circumventing chat, thats exactly my point. If you remove it people will use other ways to communicate, just like in UO. Earlier games did not have the features that nowadays people expect to be standard.

Earlier games are in all text or black and white, yeah “earlier” we didn’t even have pc.
earlier doesn’t mean better, and I never like UO much anyways, only high point is the lord british getting own by a player.
