CdProjekt New scifi IP/Conference

Fucking GET IN. Super happy with that. I cannot wait. I still have my original 80s Cyberpunk (not 2020) RPG box, which is one of the oldest things I own.

I never got into the punk side of cyberpunk. How much does this system lean toward that, versus the refined slickness of Deus Ex or even Blade Runner (which is a little dingier)?

Also, I hope for the sake of the company that it sells. Doesn’t sci-fi tend to do worse than fantasy? Variety is nice but I don’t want to risk future iterations of The Witcher universe. I’m probably worried over nothing though.

The original P&P RPG is proper Neuromancer-style chromed limbs and mirrored shades. I would imagine that they will update it with a more modern look though.

I remember playing the original P&P version as well. We had a nice summer in college where I was the DM.

The setting was pretty much a smash-up of the better known sci-fi settings that were defined as cyberpunk in the 80s.

I love cyberpunk, so I’m pretty excited for the chance to play a mature cyberpunk rpg :D

The only question now is, do I jump at the chance to pickup the Witcher 2 at 40% off, or will Steam’s summer sale offer a better alternative?

“Cyberpunk” is so old now that it’s cool again.

In fact it’s never disappeared, nearly every s-f story has the obligatory feisty girl cyberpunk or King Hacker, and other cyberpunk tropes. It’s just part of the scenery in s-f.

I always thought the best put down of cyberpunk was the beginning of Neal Stephenson’s book with the neo-Victorians and all that jazz - where gross cyberpunk style enhancements are considered poor man’s stuff, the new tech is much more shiny and nano-ified.

I admit I’ve never delved much into anything cyberpunk – Arcanum is about as close as I got – but I’m excited for this. It’s refreshing to see RPGs go in a not-fantasy direction. I enjoy that side, too, but this is sweet.

They say anything around release dates or ETAs?

Not that I heard. Considering how they only showed some concept art, I’m guessing no earlier than Summer 2013.

They already said earlier that two of their AAA games in development are scheduled for 2014 and 2015. Which sucks. But it also means that old consoles are most likely out. YAY

Is this a guess, or are they actually using the Cyberpunk 2020 rules?

Reads like it - full press release here:

During its Summer Conference today, CD Projekt RED Studio announced its currently-in-development triple-A game based on renowned pen-and-paper-RPG designer Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk® system.

Well, considering the inventor and writer of that game universe was in Warsaw and talking about the licensed IP…not a guess

As this is an action rpg, we can only hope they read the game rules for familiarity and then discard them utterly. Not interested in CDPR trying to shoehorn the full combat rules for a pen and paper rpg into a system that plays as gracefully as the red engine showed in TW2

I don’t think it would be a problem using exact rules on a real-time game.

This is actually a good system, and especially a really good world. I’m less a fan of the following version to Cyberpunk 2020. I also wonder if they’ll cut entirely the Netrunner part, since that’s essentially half the game running in cyberspace, and it’s really complex and requiring making two games into one.

They can ideally do EVERYTHING with this. The gameworld extends to space too. It has also a well developed vehicle combat.

So it’s really just about how much stuff they want to pack in. Vehicles and flight, especially, don’t fit exactly in the standard rpg type of world and require an engine built around them.

You could make SEVERAL games of insane depth just by porting exactly some of the source modules.

P.S.
The system is skill based. No levels.

Exactly. I want something that plays nicely, not an authentic translation of Friday Night Firefight. I have every confidence that this will be epic. It’s just about the perfect game announcement for me. I might start posting photos of p&p rulebook porn, complete with coughcolouring incough of the pictures. MAYBE. I was 15.

But really, we had a pile of D&D based games that reproduce the D&D ruleset.

The D&D ruleset SUCKS for a PC game. It’s just plain bad for a number of reasons. You have here instead a ruleset that is deep and perfect for a real-time game (actually BETTER, because it’s a bit of a chore to play with dices) and you demand that it isn’t faithful?

All the wrong choices in the world.

I am not too worried about the rules. However I am more worried wich version of the setting they will base it on. 2020 was all kinds of awesome story and background wise but 2030 was a turd in my opinion and that is the most recent version. I shudder to think if they use that.

I will leave that quote form the Talsorian Page

You think you’re ready. You’re not. You don’t even have a clue. The Future has Changed. The Players have Changed. The Rules have Changed
For over two decades, the Megacorporations have ruled the world from their starscraper towers, enforcing that control with armies of cyborg assassins.
While the boostergangs roamed a shattered urban wilderness, the endless party went on 24-7 in the hottest clubs, sleaziest bars and meanest streets this side of the Postholocaust.
But that was before the Crash; before the dark days of 203X. Now the battlefield belongs to the new Lords of theStreet: the DNA-shape shifting Reefers vs the full-body cyborgs of Corpore Metal, Desnai’s robo-enhanced mechajocks against themonster makers of Riptide, the nano-boosted roadwarriors of Rolling State against the cybertech megaweapons of the urban Edgerunners.

So get ready to hit Streets of the Dark Future, a world so dangerous, so dark, that only the toughest, smartest and most cybered-up will survive. But you can deal with it.

Because you’re ready. Because you’re Cyberpunk

Instead of “Roles” you have Clans and each clan has one goody/theme. The net crashed down and people grouped together because all of history is wiped or some such. Edgrunners are the closest to old school cyberpunk and the rest is just weird. Really not my cup of tea with nanomages shaping reality and stuff like that. But YMMV. Here is one review I could find that contains more information.

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/14/14681.phtml

Simply put: If it is 2020 I want to give them my money now, if it is 2030 I will gladly wait for reviews.

From what I remember Cyberpunk 2030 also ruined the good combat system.

Oh, just IP!

Also, Cyberpunk 203X is one of the worst RPG settings I’ve ever been exposed to, and that’s saying a lot (Especially given how much I liked 2020. And yes, it’s worse than CyberGen)

Yea, 203X was a real abomination of a setting. I am still angry I spend the money on a print version.
