Not competing with as far as aesthetic appeal doesn’t mean CO is in a different genre. It’s not like I’m comparing Tekken and CO. Really, it’s about what can be learned from WoW’s success and what it does right, that’s applicable (mainly quest and instance design).
I’m surprised that nobody is noting how CO runs like ass. I’ve been playing on two different machines, both relatively powerful, and the game chugs whenever a lot of things start happening. And it’s not like Cryptic is pushing the envelope when it comes to graphics, either.

Really? I have a very old videocard at this point (1950xt) and the biggest issues were turning off dynamic lights and shadows down to low. I turned down physics objects to 50 as well. I probably get around 20 fps when fighting (even in a group) at 1650x1080. I have a core 2 duo, oc to 3 ghz, and 2 gigs of ram as well. The flyby when I first enter a zone though chugs like crazy though.
It’s certainly pushing the limits of my machine. I need a new video card. : /
To be fair, I haven’t spent a ton of time messing with the graphics settings. I just hit “recommended” and went on my way.
I ended up getting the game after my brother decided he was going to give it a go. Here is my character, Radioactive, modeled after a character of the same name I used to draw and make comics of as a kid.

Nice. :)
One of the things I was thinking they should do is unlock a character slot for every character your each max level with. I think that’s pretty fair and encourages people to stick with their alts longer. It could especially useful if there’s going to be significant gaps between content releases. They could even tie it to some grindy perk if they felt it warranted it.
Though that may make all those lifetime subscribers complain, but we all know we’re going to end up with microtransaction character slots anyway.
I’m sure many people have already seen this as it is from a 22ish mission, but i really liked this screenshot…

Now the obvious question is why the hell player forms look like a piece of shit and not like that…
This was a pretty interesting boss fight as far as CO goes, but i’m still waiting for engaging boss fights that require more than just keeping linger block up, blocking major attacks and “mini-gunning for great justice”.
The single most annoying thing about this game for me is the fucking citizens running up to me in the city and offering me missions. It wouldn’t be bad if they just ran up and told me they had something if I was interested. But no. Instead they run up and pop up a goddamn mission dialog that cancels out whatever you’ve got going on, even if it’s the mission dialog from another NPC.
The second most annoying thing is the duel requests. CO wins for Most Absurdly Annoying Duel Invite In Any Game Ever award.

Edit: Nevermind, people use blocking to build up energy hehe.
Is there any way to look up characters online by name? My brother saw a particularly cool costume, but didn’t take a screen shot.

So retconning is now cheaper. They have some formula based on item and how far back it is, but it still looks like you have to go back through all your previous choices… which is a really poor way to handle it.
They should let you pick and choose what you want to retcon rather than having to go backward through your previous choices. It could be partially based on how far back it is, but if you want to prevent people from respecing often is throw an exponential fee each time you do change something that slowly degrades over time (like WoW’s talent respecs to some extent) I see no advantage in penalizing someone for wanting to change something they made earlier in their career. Shit, because of my one mistake, I tried to counterbalance it with making other choices while leveling… except now to correct it I have to undo all those. :( It would cost me still about 5, maybe even 10 times, how much money I have to make the necessary changes.

is that a recent (ie today) change? they made it “cheaper” (ie they fixed the supposed “bug” that made it even more insanely expensive) a little while ago but it was still literally impossible to do a full respec because the respec cost increases at a faster rate (ie you level) than you can possibly farm money unless you use another character where leveling doesn’t matter.
If they didn’t lower them again, it is just plain broken. The wow equivalent would be if respeccing one talent required 500 gold and the cost increased 20% each time you leveled. If you save up all of your money while leveling, you can probably respec the last 2 or 3 choices.
The ultimate irony is cryptic has stated they’re going to take a wait and see attitude with respec costs and money drops, which is exactly what they were criticized for not doing when they made huge sweeping changes without testing them.

Yeah, it’s a change today. They are cheaper than yesterday (I can respec an extra slot or two if I use all my money)… but they still aren’t very reasonable and I think it’s more of a structural issue (unable to respec any power you chose, instead having to buy though all your previous choices). Again, this is stuff that feels like they should have had a handle on from a closed beta (or at least a better handle on).
Though, it’s not exactly like WoW, since you can’t change your class there. Since this is a full skill system, you can fundementally alter your archetype/etc. The wow equivalent would be just changing your advantages and perhaps talents. Still, I don’t think that warrants harsher penalties, you just need a more target mechanism to make sure people aren’t rerolling everday between pvp and pve, etc.

Well, I’ll be on tonight. Time for level 22, so I can empty my inventory of all these rewards I’m carrying around. But I suppose my pack will be full of level 23 and 24 items by then.

Have the announced free respecs for head start characters arrived yet, or are they still working on the technology?
Mordrak

What they should do is give a respec to everyone who bought the game in the first month, or put in like a level 25 group quest that gives a respec for the first completion. But no, I haven’t heard anything.
Yeah, instead of trying to give out free respecs to certain player characters, just do a global one for everyone and get it done.
They need to build for the future too though as it is unrealistic that they will give out free respecs every time there are decent sized changes to any power.

Why? Everyone else (CoH, WoW) does. My CoH characters have 5, 6 free respecs banked just from idling for months while Issues came out and powers underwent changes.

Do you really have to ask?
Speaking of which, there’s going to be a live dev chat where they ask preplanned questions? Hrmmm. It looks like they’ll have a much shorter Q&A session too. Anyway, fire away!
