Wow does not. the vast majority of times they change skills, they do not give free respecs. This is ok though because respecs are viable without hiring 20 gold farmers to work for a couple weeks. They only offer respecs when they radically change mechanics behind classes and tons of abilities.
CO is different though since there are no classes. If cryptic for example decides to change the main tk stat from end to ego, it means that i would need to change one of my superstat and probably drop shadowform as well at the minimum. i might also need to change supporting stuff that was related to those. So what do they do in that case? do they give everyone who has a tk blade skill a free total respec?
That was perhaps an extreme example since it is radically changing the mechanics behind a power set which is a case wow would give a free respec, but how about a smaller one. I build my munitions character around force block’s energy generation (i didn’t actually do this) and because i use force block a lot, i don’t take other energy generation skills. One day cryptic decides to make all blocks the same and removes the double energy generation. Now i’d need to pick up a number of energy helpers so do i get a free full respec?
p.s. the first tk example of a radical mechanic change is actually happening “in the future.” I’ll give you a hint as to whether i expect cryptic to give my tk a respec or tell me to reroll. Hint: it isn’t the first one. Never know though, maybe i’ll be lucky. On the plus side it means more time playing my munitions hero and starting a power armor hero since i don’t feel like releveling a tk at the moment.
Free retcon for all tonight. From this thread.

Hurray, they found the technology! (Those glowies can be hard to spot sometimes.) My munitions main wasn’t too terribly hit by the major patch, but definitely has things I would have changed already if I could have just afforded to.
woot i can continue playing my tk whom i really enjoyed!
My munitions hero is just how i want so i don’t think i will change anything except i might get teleport. Not sure on the teleport though as being able to hover and blast people is very nice in crowded areas, especially since the minigun is basically a sniper rifle so you can hover in the air and just destroy bosses. I might spend some time in the power house messing with bullet ballet aoe though.
My tk hero will be viable without rerolling. not sure what i will pick up though. dex/ego stats are nearly assured, but haven’t decided on a passive yet. Maybe lightning reflexes, but i still believe LR is one of the worse defensive passives. Ego form is a possibility i suppose, but not having con as a super stat would make an already weak defensively power even weaker. I’m still not a fan of ego form’s damage gain though.
I don’t have anyone else to respec. Other than that I just have two (mostly) identical looking power armor heroes. One is int/end (PFF) and one is int/con (invuln). I just made the invuln one and am probably going to be playing it over the PFF one since PFF sounds horrible now. I already have two light tanks (ie they can take some damage but i have to watch out and block every special), it would be nice to have one character who can wade through the big damage. I also HATE how pff doesn’t work with block.
Now the only problem is what to play. I refuse to play my tk until they put the stat changes through though as i don’t want to commit to a stat until it is for sure going to happen (going dex/ego would make me sad if they later decided not to change tk’s end focus to ego).

they had the tech already in beta, they gave out free respec in beta.
You can save the free respec i guess so my munitions hero will be saving it at the moment.

Meet Mr. Funky Fantastic, whose huge ego combined with an over exposure to the funk (also known as Funkion particles) gave him some super funkadelic mental faculties… like putting foes to sleep with the tales of his super funk awesomeness or showing them screenshots of random avatars only he finds funny.
Edit: They really need to do another art pass on their suit jackets. They are pretty awful, the under shirt doesn’t even tuck into the belt. I guess it could be a vest.

Rant: it pisses me off that micro munitions just make missiles appear out of nowhere.
I will probably use the free full respec to trade those cool looking jet boots in to teleport. This is only a level 10 hero but i’d still rather not waste a large amount of money (it is pretty expensive even considering i have a level 21 which is extremely stupid) respeccing my travel skill.

Neat. :)
Yeah, that annoyed me too. I was expecting at least something like the shoulder mini gun thing. Oh well… :( I’m pretty annoyed at the limited character slots. I hope they announce something soon (particularly a way to earn them in game). I don’t know if they’ll try to compete this directly, but I could live with the equivalent of a mission architect system for using all those extra hero concepts. What I need to do is stop making characters and just pick one and level.
Edit: Did we ever get a guild going? Or did people just end up gravitating toward RPS?

I don’t plan to play long enough to join a guild.
I’d be up for a Super Group should someone arrange it. I was more enthusiastic before, when I didn’t realize that the majority of missions are designed for solo play. We could try team PvP, though that only works in a fairly narrow range of levels, or maybe tour public quests?
Hopefully this gets better at higher levels… At the moment the primary benefit seems to be the extra costume slot. :-/
Sadly, I’m starting to think CoH craptastic mission design is better, as at least you could reliably find a challenge.

respec delayed (until tomorrow maybe). i guess the tech really wasn’t there after all…

That technology, boy. It’s hard to get in place. Every time you think you got it in place, you realize it’s not sitting right and you have to shift it again. It’s like how sisyphean it can be to get every last air bubble out from under new wallpaper.

I was getting my butt handed to me in the Lost inspired mission in Canada. I kept getting ganged up on while trying to rescue the survivors. My brawler just couldn’t handle the number of guys coming at me.
I was bummed to see that when I went to get new powers that I could not purchase an energy producing ranged ability. I really wish I had taken the time to design my own character type instead of going with the base brawler type, but I really don’t want to take the time to go back through and recreate the same character with a different power set.

so, the fix to the lack of basic gameplay information from cryptic via hard or soft copy, and the way-overpriced costs to retcon 1 slot, much less ONLY 2 or 3 slots … is a free complete respec?
isn’t that like someone’s house burning and some dude standing out front pointing across the street and saying, “look - 2 dogs!”
Saw this while looking at their forums for a bit. sums up my feelings nicely.
When the free respec does come, supposedly you need to go to power house, use the full respec, make sure you leave power house, then go back and mess with your abilities. If you didn’t do the leave step in the past, you wouldn’t be able to respec abilities for free after getting the full respec. I wouldn’t have a ton of faith that cryptic fixed that “Feature.”

Does a full respec start you at the base level of ability you had upon entering the tutorial zone for the first time, or do you get to completely rebuild your character’s abilities/archetype from scratch?
It’ll work the same way as respecing currently works. If you wanted to, you could pay to remove every power you have, including the initial two that came with whatever preset framework you chose. Which is why this respec thing is apparently so tricky for them to balance. A full respec is basically a total reroll of your character. Think of if you took your Shaman in WoW and respeced him to be a Paladin.

If you decided to respec back to the very beginning, would that encompass only powers, or would you get to choose an entirely new archetype to start from (including a custom archetype)? What I’m getting at is if I respec all the way back so I have no powers, am I still going to be stuck with the Brick stats I had (Strength, Constitution) or is that stuff also up for being redone? It wouldn’t be worth much to be able to respec my brawler character to a ranged character if I didn’t have the supporting stats for those powers to be effective.

Yes you can also go back and change your initial stats, at least I can if I want to spend enough money in the retcon screen.

Basically, there is no such thing as an archetype. The archetype you can choose when creating your character is just a predefined choice of 2 powers and 1 trait. You can respec those just like normal.
bah there are (hopefully wrong but does’t seem like it) rumors that lightning reflexes has been nerfed. I really hope they’re wrong or it is bug, because LR was nowhere near the best defensive already and many people already discounted it.
