Civilization MMO announced...(no joke)

Here are the details. XLGames (not Firaxis) will be working on it with apparently Sid Meier and it’s going to be running on the CryEngine 3.

EDIT: Apparently Sid Meier IS NOT working on it (see Telefrog’s post below).

And, woe, doom came unto us this day, with much groaning and gnashing of teeth, and the lamentations of the women filled the streets, for the world was lost.

Nope. Sid Meier isn’t working on it at all. He approved the basic idea and never had another thing to do with it.

And for those wondering about Sid Meier’s involvement with CO: Song related that the two of them met once at the beginning of the project, where Meier looked it over and offered a general approval of the overall design. But there has been no other involvement since.

I…what the…

Hmm…

So; Once your faction (one of three) gets to Alpha Centauri, the servers are shut down – or will that be the release of the expansion?

I’m going to play as a Great Scientist! My alt will probably be a Cargo Ship.

Didn’t they try something like this on Facebook already?

Good, but I think this one is a step up:

It’s unneccessary to prove you have the better gifs/pics for all situations Brian, everybody knows that. ;)

I think this is a cool idea.

MMO’s are universally lacklustre and boring, grindy games where imagination goes to die.

The crazyness of this idea is the best of it. I mean, It can save the genre from itself.

Yup, CivWorld.

Not trying to prove anything, just sharing is all. :)

Everyone knows that the heart of Civilization has always been its multiplayer experince. This is obviously an attempt to go back to basics and to find its soul again. In no way is this a cash in.

Oh, for fuck’s sake.

I know you’re joking and I am in complete agreement with your sentiment regarding a Civ MMO, but what you say is actually the case for me. Yes, even back in Civ1, I’d play “multiplayer” with my friend where he would take control of half the cities / units, that sort of thing. Same way I played X-COM! :)

I hope I don’t have to farm endgame raids forever to get the Egyptian-themed columns for my castle.

Well, you will if you don’t want to buy them with 40 CivHammers via the cash shop.

I’ll get a little serious here. My problem is probably more with the ‘Massive’ and less with ‘Multiplayer.’ That is what I’m trying to wrap my head around.

There was a hotseat Civ 1 hack. It was a little buggy thought.
