Fantastic! I can’t wait to see what people do with the official tools.

I am not into modding Civ games, but the idea that all the stats vars are into a sqlite database (generated from the xml files) is very interesting.´
Also, modern gaming, with the devs of a game making it easy to mod his game is a amazing luxury.
Hell… there’s even cool advices on the end of document. We really live on the future (minus flyiing cars).

Aha! I was going to ask how to get started on this modding business, as googling didn’t seem to turn anything up. Thanks muchly!

Thanks a ton Kael. Nice work as always.
My kid appreciates it (and so do I!)
Nice work, Kael. :)
Great news, Kael!
So, um, not to rush you or anything… but what’s the ETA for the Civ 5 version of FFH? :)

Kael - or Dale,
Can I ask a few questions about modding that I didn’t see covered in the documentaion?
I had one of the guys from civfanatics load my mod and authorize it so others could use it in the Civ V mod browser several days ago. How do I load that completed work so I can publish it officially thru on-line services?
It’s the added difficutly level mod. Thanks!

The modders guide page 73 (publishing your mod) should cover it.
You wont be able to update a mod someone else uploaded. Have them mark your mod private and you can publish it as a new mod.

That’s what I want to do, but I’d like them to have all of their units out of my territory first :)

All set - took 4 revisions to get it to display properly - lol.
Well, when I had open borders on a civ after I took a peacefire to grab their mad offers of cash to just keep their last two cities alive for a moment, I positioned my forces around one of them and then declared war as soon as the peace treaty ended (10 turns). I was startled to see all of my forces were instantly shoved entirely out of their territory in different directions. My guess is that the same would happen.

Probably the best criticof Civ V, I’ve read by a very good Civ IV player. I agree with about 90% of what he road, that said I am still having fun playing the game.
One specific area where the AI is amazingly bad is naval combat. I’m finishing up my first Prince game, and I had a single destroyer run into 3 German Frigates and 4 Caravels. Destroyers definitely have a huge edge, but it hardly mattered - the German ships did nothing. Did not fire back, did not run away.
That seems like incomplete programming to me. If you’re not smart enough to figure a way to combine units to attack, the ships should have one of two responses: flee if possible, or close and shoot if the player’s ship is too fast to escape. My guess is that the AI fell through a series of decision trees, and didn’t find any response.
Even when the balance is pretty close, the naval AI tends to do a lot of running rather than fighting. I’ve yet to see it use a ship meaningfully for anything other than shore bombardment.
Wow, those are some strange design decisions. I may just wait for the expansion on this one.

For all its flaws, I stayed up until 4am playing the other night. So it still seems to have that “one more turn . . .” quality.
I’m also of the opinion that hardcore Civ fans, the ones who typically push to the higher difficulties, are not going to be happy with the decisions and AI. Those of us who enjoy the series but rarely venture beyond the mid-range difficulty levels will notice those limitations less. And if the Steam stats on the game are any indicator, it’s not the hardcore Civ fans that are the primary players of the game.

The AI doesn’t have any trouble conquering city states in my games.

I dunno about “best critic” since he comes in from the onset with a mindset of “this game is shit because its not Civ4 and heres the proof.”
Tom’s reviews and dislikes are far superior to that pile of crap.

Yeah the more aggressive civs gobble up city states without too much trouble most of the time.
In my third game I did however have an overconfident four city Germany being conquered completely by Genoa… :P
