I like Civ V and still play it, but Civ IV with all the expansions is the best TBS game of all time IMO.

I like Civ V a lot and it was my entry point into the series since I dropped off around Civ 2 or something. I’ve gotten a 150+ hours out of it, pre-patch. However, I would still recommend starting with IV, as it has been a brutal transition trying to back up to that and would likely have been a lot less painful the other way around, even if V had lost more of its initial luster because of that.

Sniff, doing a two player on Deity level, and the AI isn’t giving me a challenge on large maps :(

I remain hopeful…

I bought Civ IV when it came out and tried to get into it a few times over the years. I could tell it was great stuff but for some reason it never really clicked for me. Civ V clicked right away, mostly because the interface made it so much clearer what was going on, so now I finally understand what’s so great about Civ. After that I went back to try IV and I’m loving it because I feel like I know what I’m doing (even though I’m still not great at it).

I don’t know about this brutal transition LK is talking about. I came home from work today and played 5 hours of Civ IV and loved every second of it. They’re both great games but Civ V is much easier to get into for a newbie even if it isn’t as deep as Civ IV + expansions. I think you can’t go wrong either way, but I’d recommend Civ V.

I notice a bunch of $2.99 Civ V map packs on Steam today. Anyone have any of these? From the descriptions it just sounds like 1 map, no scenarios. $3 for 1 map seems pretty steep to me.

Horse armor, round 2?

That’s ridiculous. Note the map “pack” refers to the entire collection – each $2.99 item is just one map that anyone could create!

Yeah, I could justify the $5 for a new civ because it contains new animations, voice work, and such. $3 for a single map or scenario is just outrageous though.

I think that for “realists” out there those maps might be enticing, but that’s about it.

Yeah, I was actually coming here to ask about these. Are these scenarios, ala the Mongols, or just a map?

Just the map.

Horse Armor.

Wow, that’s pretty bad. $2.99 for all 4. But paying that much each, gee, what a bonehead decision. Capitalism, Ho!

Well, at least they got the game patched up good and solid before moving to the add-ons.

Wow, shades of 3do. All the market will bear, I guess.

Speaking of which, those of us that preordered through D2D were promised a free DLC. Has that come out? Is it coming?

I’ll fall off my chair laughing if it turns out it’s one of the four maps.

Yeah. It’s supposed to be two civs (and maps as well, iirc), but I have this sinking feeling about it …

Believe that was supposed to be Babylon, Mongolia, and the barbarian-riddled cradle of civilization maps that were released in the month or two after game shipped.

Preordered through Steam myself and have all of these already. Did not pay a dime beyond original game purchase.

I don’t think so. My preorder from D2D came with Babylon as one of the bullet-point preorder bonus items. Another was Civ III digital edition. Yet another was for a different DLC with a civilization and maps. In fact, here’s the screenshot of the account page that still shows it on “preorder” status.

I haven’t even used the one I got for free, so I hardly think I’d be purchasing any of these map packs. That’s just not the sort of thing that entices me.

[Edit] And yeah, the D2D deal is still to come. Babylon/Mongols was not it (since I got both those for free without the need for D2D).
