Cheese and rice! Does anyone have info on a new a) patch, b) DLC, c) expansion on this? I was hoping an expansion pack would be out for the holidays.

No, no, and not gonna happen, IMO.

Firaxis does seem to have abandoned the game. 2K Greg was the usual info person on the official forums but he just left after the last patch. Maybe if we’re lucky they’ll eventually release the complete set of modding tools that were allegedly in beta many moons ago.

Otherwise, I think it’s over. The changes we might have expected in expansions have all come in DLC (new civs, scenarios) and patches (revised game mechanics, new buildings). At this point an “expansion” that goes beyond these changes would really be an all-new game – at full price, with its own DLC – so I suppose that’s what Firaxis will be working on once CivWorld is out.

I’ve been a bit dissappointed on the lack of news, so this is all speculation afaik. That said, my thinking is along the same lines as Chris’ logic. There will be more Civ, but I think it’s likely to be in the shape of Civ VI (or some such title - they may go with some silly naming convention like “CivEmpire” after CivWorld). As an aside, 2k Greg seems to read the forums based upon last activity times, but just doesn’t post unless he also has an alt.

For quite some time, I’d thought an expansion was practically in the can waiting for final touches and revisions because the areas that the game could have been improved seemed modular and therefore easily implemented in the system . However, I suspect the middling reviews and fan reception combined with a more cautious economic environment might have convinced someone that a sequel would be a way to recapture some of the perceived lost base (yes, I know that Civ V is still very strong based upon Steam numbers) and luster.

I really enjoy Civ V as it stands, although I was hoping for more. I’m sure that will happen even though the price point for it may be another $50-$60. But time will tell - I always hope to be pleasantly surprised when it comes to the game industry, and occasionally I get my wish.

There’s also the whole “Strategy games aren’t contemporary” POV of the 2K CEO to consider. I don’t know how much control they have over Firaxis but it makes me doubt the publisher’s commitment regarding Civ.

Yeah, I’m also sad that there haven’t been anymore updates. I was really hoping for an expansion announcement by now, but there’s not even news of future patches or DLC, so I’m a bit worried.

Firaxis seems busy with CivWorld right now. Hopefully once that is out, there will be more updates to Civ V on the way. It’s unlikely that they’d just abandon it, given how well the franchise, and this most recent game, has done overall.

I hope that’s true. I’d love to get back into the game one day, and having some major additions to pump into it would be welcome.

Really sucks that they use their time on civ world, its a sham of a game.

Agreed.
Gave it a few days and while it’s slightly better than most other Facebook games it’s still a fucking Facebook game - if there’s no Civ V expansion I’ll be sad.

Calling Civ World a game might be more charitable than Firaxis deserves.

So all of the Civ V DLC is on sale today for 66% off, does anyone have recommendations for what’s good? I had sort of assumed that most of the DLC would eventually be made irrelevant by an enthusiastic modding community, but I don’t know if that’s happened yet.

Get the various civs and the ancient wonders pack. Everything else is just map packs.

I agree with this. I got the Korea/ancient wonder pack on this sale, although I haven’t played Civ5 in a while and won’t be getting back to it any time soon. That was the only civ I didn’t have.

I just got Spain+Inca, Denmark+Explorer’s and Korea+Wonders for $7.59. That’s 4 civs, 3 scenarios, 3 wonders, and 5 map scripts. That’s like a mini expansion for a reasonable price. Better value than Civ4Warlords was, for sure.

Thanks for the heads up!

2KGreg just posted a note on the forums that all is not lost:

Hey dudes,

I want to confirm to you that our plans for Civilization V are far from done. Another patch is currently in the works (QA is doing a pass on it now and I’ll have more details soon) and there are some much bigger plans we hope to announce in the coming months.

Well that’s good to hear. They need to new PR department.

Gamersgate have Civ V on sale now for $7.49. It activates on Steam which made it aan easy decision for me.

It’s alive! It’s aaaaaaaaaalive! :D
