Holy freaking crap! They’re finally adding animations to multiplayer?! I can finally play this multiplayer with my friends! Joyous day! If the man that decided to make this happen were here I would hug him to death.

Well…
I’ve played a ton of MP Civ, the animations really slow the game down a heck without adding much. I can appriciate maybe that in a PVP situation, but otherwise its just adding wait time.

Just to make sure nothing much has changed recently, I just played most of a game. Emperor level pangaea to expedite interaction without punishing the AI for not understanding water.

The tactical AI is just as stupid as ever. Still has no idea how to coordinate units on the attack, nor even how to move them without making them vulnerable. Still has no idea what to do with ranged units or siege weapons (in this last game played to 1600 or so), no AI that I saw built a single siege weapon). Still insists on routing transport units by sea within range of known ranged units. Still pulses units around for no reason every turn even when not in combat.

The strategic AI isn’t quite as horrible as it used to be, but it’s still pretty bad. Still declares war for no reason from across the map when it can’t find a pathing solution to attack any of my units or cities. You’d think with all those cities and all that population from the handicap the AI ought to be able to do better with tech, but even with 3-4 moderate cities I always seem to do much better, apparently because the AI doesn’t understand how to choose its culture options, doesn’t know what wonders are valuable, doesn’t build libraries and universities much, and doesn’t choose great scientists when it has the choice. It’s only in a continent game where one of the AIs takes over its whole private continent before I get there that it really has a chance.

Civ 5 is not a dreadful game, but it should have been much better, and the AI in all phases – tactical, strategic, diplomatic, and civ-administrative – should be much better than it is.

For you, maybe.

I’m glad the lack of animations doesn’t bother you, but for me the game is practically unplayable without them. I find it SUPER difficult to keep track of what’s going on, which units are attacking which, where the enemy is coming from, etc. A friend and I have tried mutliple times over the past year or two to play a game of Civ V together and sooner or later the lack of animations kills it for us.

I’ll join the pile on–I hated it myself and modded it out as well.

Quick derailment: What did you guys do to mod out espionage in Civ IV? I just deselected it as an option in the custom game setup. Or did modding it out also include removing the bonuses that the courthouse and other buildings gave. If I recall, they provided a bonus to culture rather than espionage when it was deselected.

I’m incredibly excited by this expansion. I haven’t played Civ V since release, and I might now hold off until the expansion drops. If the DLC helped fund the expansion, then I am all for that model of revenue.

I had the same experience. That was my main problem, but when you factored in an AI that cant interact with the player (is that being fixed? I’d hope so in a Diplo expansion) it made the game feel so lifeless and bland.

Kotaku has more info about the expansion

Why 100 hp to units instead of 10hp? That’s a big change in granularity.

Odd thing I noticed with the last patch: bombardment (ship to shore) animations are now missing. Any word on this?

edit - apparently, that patch was not intended for release and it’s been rolled back. nvm

Why is DX10/11 Civ crashing on me every 15-60 minutes? Most lame.

I’ll dload the latest Nvidia drivers, but I was already at 285.x. Only a few months old. Surely newer than the Civ executable?

DX10/11 never worked for some people whose video card and OS supported it. Myself included. So far as I know it was never fixed.

But it used to work for me, near launch. I have a GTX 460. I’m not running any mods, either.

I don’t get any crashing, but I will say that Civ 5 running in DX 10/11 mode makes my computer chug harder than Skyrim on the highest graphic level.

I used to have a problem with my 460 in DX11 mode but since I got the 570 it’s been running like a dream on DX11 and everything maxed (1680x1050), even large maps in the late game.

I see brand spankin’ new Nvidia drivers came out though, so maybe try those?

I have a 460GTX on my PC, and it runs perfectly fine in DX11 mode. Hell, it even does it on Vista as opposed to Windows 7 and I do it with mods on huge maps at 1920x1200 with maxed out textures. I can’t say it never crashes, but we’re talking once every 50 hours or so of game time.

I’m guessing it has little to do with the GPU and that it’s likely something else causing problems in subtle ways.

reinstall direct x?

The new drivers that I just downloaded today made a ton of difference.

Civ 5 worked great under Dx10/11 when I had my GTX 275, but crashed regularly when I upgraded to a GTX 560.

Once I turned the leader portraits to the lowest quality my crashing problem went completely away. No idea if this is the same problem that you’re experiencing though.

I hadn’t played this in awhile and got all hot and bothered by the expansion announcement. So I loaded it up. First though, I went searching for mods and found this: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=383375

It is purely cosmetic but reduces the size of the units, adds more of them to a formation and adds some units for flavor. I think it makes the game look much better, but man that AI is still poop. I tried a team game on King since I had never done that before and my AI partner (Alexander) was painful to watch. First off he didn’t expand past two cities. This may be due to the Russian horde expanind like crazy, but there was room and good land available.

The tactical AI is still awful. Watching my “partner” go at a city state was painful. There was no coordination of units and the front line dudes attacked without waiting for the trebs and archers to launch. THEN, one of the treb heads in to the lake to cool off for a few turns. That is when I turned the game off and decided to wait for the expansion and hope for the best.
