You mean you wanted it back since Civ2, when this was actually already possible.

I tried the Fire and Ice mod. I admire the work the author put in it, but I could not find it fun without any wonders.

I look forward to the expansion - They stated tourism / archeology kicks in right about the late renaissance/early modern age which I always found the weakest in Civ. In Civ 4, once you reached cavalry the game was over. In Civ 5 it’s roughly rifle/artillery age.

Civ 2 let one city contribute food to another? I don’t remember it. I remember caravans, but not trading food. My memory sucks.

You’re right on track - you could select the trade commodity for caravans, and if you selected food the “trade route” would remove 1 food from the source city and add it to the destination city.
I didn’t make use of it often, but yeah, it was possible.

There’s something to be said for civlike games where food is a global resource. Warlock and Master of Orion 2 did it that way.

It makes sense that an empire could distribute food, at least once they are developed a bit. I’m OK if there would be an amount of loss depending on tech level and distance to the recipient.

I bet companies could feed me the same game every 5 years and I wouldn’t have a clue since I forget lots of stuff! Hmmm, I think some companies do take that approach.

I was going to say something about the size of Medieval cities being limited to what farms in a day’s travel could support, but then I remembered that the Roman Empire routinely fed Rome with grain imported by ship. Yeah, many foods are perishable, but the thing about flour is that is stores nearly indefinitely if you keep it dry and keep insects out.

I have one concern about making caravans/trade ships actual units rather than abstracting them: performance. The game turns can already take a while once the AI has a bunch of units to shuffle around, so I hope this doesn’t add to it excessively. Hopefully it can be super efficient since the routes are already set, but I’m still a little concerned about it.

I would argue that Colonisation 1 is the game that you should milestone this feature as, because you could take X bushels of wheat, stick it in a caravan and just move it around the map like a unit. (Much like you could do with every other resource, including people). Such an excellent way to implement ‘feeder’ cities and trade etc.

Colonization is really a vastly different type of game, though - MUCH more focused on micromanagement and such. And not a part of the Civ franchise.

But now that you mention it, why did nobody ever make a game like that again? Even Firaxis’ own Civ4-based pseudo remake pales in comparison. :-(

I liked Wagon Train Tycoon, er Civ IV Colonization.

Colonization was awesome. Getting the indians to wreck havoc never got old.

GreenManGaming has the Brave New World expansion at 10% off (same as Steam), but their 20% off coupon (GMG20-JLKSA-7A8HA) works for it bringing the price down to $21.60. I’m not usually a preorder type of guy, but I knew I was going to get this expansion at some point in the near future so I might as well.

Free weekend on Steam to go along with that too.

Damn, I just pre-ordered it on Steam. Ah, well.

It’s funny, I started to balk at $27. I think the various Steam sales and iOS prices have changed my perception of game prices.

Just in case you didn’t know yet (and haven’t bought it yet, like me) Gods and Kings is 75% off at Steam at the moment.

G&K will be made slightly irrelevant actually by the new expansion since Brave New World includes the religion and spy mechanics. But if you can’t bear not to play the civs (i.e. Celts, Byzantium, some others I forgot) exclusive to G&K then by all means go ahead.

Well, one of the civs you forgot is the Dutch, so there you go ;-).
